Gray was a big failure under the big city lights of NY and hated pitching there. I highly doubt he wants to go to a big market for that reason and most of the teams in contention are in big markets or no where near close to home - with the exception of maybe the Brewers and the Tigers. Also with $35M salary next year the Cards are going to have to pay a lot of that salary to even get a teams 15th best prospect. He probably has negative trade value right now, and honestly is probably better help setting a culture in STL with younger pitchers and eating 160 IP next year.Mary1966 wrote: ↑July 23 25, 11:18 pmBefore the season, Gray said he wasn’t 100% convinced that the 2025 Cardinals couldn’t accomplish something. Now that he knows the team isn’t going to make the playoffs, would that change his mind about the NTC? He seems to have chosen to come to St. Louis because it was close to his home in Tennessee. But if you read X, even Yankee fans are discussing him, and he was terrible when he was there. Arenado has shown a desire to be traded to a contender. Does Gray have a desire to be on a winning team that would trump his desire to be close to home? I love him, he’s now my favorite player, but he’s one of the few Cardinals that other teams’ fans actually want.

Arenado needs to be traded or DFA'd.
He is just clogging up a position right now and taking away at bats from younger players.

I understand that you may get more the closer you get to the deadline, but we have (should have) 3 guys from the bullpen that need to be moved (helsley, maton, and matz), and I wouldn't use them with only a few days left for fear of injury..but that really taxes a bullpen when you have 3 guys you cannot use.
maybe helsley, who'd bring the biggest return, may be right up to the deadline, but matz and maton need to get moved asap so we can bring up fresh arms to replace them.

I'd be fine trading Donovan. He's got 2 more seasons left, we're not gonna be contending in that time, and he's probably our most attractive player. All depends what they get back. I don't think anyone should be off the table.

Unless they are planning to open the pocketbook this offseason and let Chaim spend us back into the first division they should be listening on everyone that is on the current major league roster.
No reason to trade away prospects unless we pivot into a win now situation.

To me it would be a mistake to trade Donovan or Romero, we'd be entering perpetual rebuild territory a la the Pirates. We're not that far away.ghostrunner wrote: ↑July 28 25, 4:04 pmI'd be fine trading Donovan. I know there is still about 24 hours left, but this trade deadline has sucked across the board.

I do think trades were going to happen--if they were happening--close to the deadline. But yeah, fairly boring so far.cardinalkarp wrote: ↑July 29 25, 1:03 pmI know there is still about 24 hours left, but this trade deadline has sucked across the board.

I'd be cool with trading Helsley for as much as they can get, then re-signing him in the offseason. I'm a proponent of signing guys who actually want to be here, like Sonny Gray (among others).
And if it doesn't work out with Helsley, then I am already on record as saying that I think Hence is a future closer.
