Sometimes I read front office quotes and think even they've become bored with how they operate.

Gorman fell farther than anticipated. You could argue St. Louis got the best high-school raw power, college raw power, and slider in the entire draft. Roberts has a chance to start, but we think he ends up as a Luke Gregerson type because the slider is too good compared to the rest of the arsenal.

I thought the same thing when I read this in the P-D article:
Randy Flores via the Post Dispatch wrote:The early picks of the draft didn't go as scripted in most of the mock drafts, which left some highly touted players, like Gorman, available as the Cardinals pick came around. Flores said he was the top player on the team's board when No. 19 came around.
I would hope they would select the top player on their board when their 1st pick came around. Otherwise, that would indicate they were flying by the seat of their pants.

I believe Randy is a graduate of the Mad Hungarian School of Communication.

Lots of teams don’t take their best player with their first pick in the hopes of signing under slot and using the savings to sway a later draft pick.

Is that how we got the Kozmonaut over the great pitcher I can't think of his name now?

Porcello.

Draft rules were different then, though. Teams were capped only by how much they wanted to invest. Now you have to work from a designated pool based on the quantity and quality of your picks.

Not going so hot for the Rockies’ top pick, Ryan Rolison.

I think Gorman will be good. Probably our future 1B.
