Re: Obama/Biden vs. McCain/Palin
It's interesting. I'm taking a cultural diversity class in grad school right now, and we've been obviously talking a lot about the election. My professor(who also appears African-American but would describe himself as biracial) says that a lot of Blacks do not consider Barack Obama Black because he has been raised largely by White values, went to White school, etc. He even goes so far as to say that he isn't Black, he's basically White.TimeForGuinness wrote:So you're saying he hates himself...Cronos69 wrote:By the way, Obama isn't black. There was a lot of this talk before the NC primary's, but clearly the black community has embraced Obama. Not saying that includes everyone, but I don't think that's the majority.

I describe him like a Dilly Bar. Milk chocolate on the outside, creamy white on the inside.Cronos69 wrote:It's interesting. /bad joke
Anyway, I don't think it really matters to most how he's classified. To most blacks, it means a lot to at least have the option of voting for a guy who isn't lilly white for once. The guy behind me in line this morning was discussing how different it might be if Obama was much darker complexion--would he have gotten this far? And what if he carried himself like "a brother" (his words)? I have to admit, he probably wouldn't have reached this point.

There was a hilarious clip on the Daily Show when Stewart interviewed Obama last week. Stewart first defined the Bradley Effect, then pointed out to Obama that he's half black/half white... and asked him if his white half would give him any trouble about voting for himself.

It's obviously a complex issue, and different people have differing opinions. Being black, for some, is as much about heritage as it is about the color of your skin. Lots of groups struggle with this issue - like: what does it really mean to be Jewish?Cronos69 wrote:It's interesting. Really, it's perfect example of why we need to avoid gross generalizations and have deeper discussions on issues like this.

He's an interesting case; I'm fairly sure he's voting Obama, but his SES would suggest that he'd vote McCain. *shrugs*Michael wrote:Cronos69 wrote:It's interesting. I've mentioned here and there about how lukewarm I am to both candidates; I'll admit that half of the reason I would have voted Obama(if my vote hadn't been turned away five times) was because I wanted to see if the country was ready for a president of a different racial background.

It's a fun class. It really causes us to take a look at ourselves and our own upbringing, caregivers, education, etc. in order to see what kinds of stereotypes and biases we have in order to prepare us to be clinicians who can adequately understand and serve those of different cultural backgrounds. I don't leave a single class without learning something new about some different ethnic or cultural background. Plus, one of our assignments is to immerse ourselves in some different ethnic or cultural place or event. Very enlightening, and eye-opening.maddash wrote:It's obviously a complex issue, and different people have differing opinions.
