The Replacements Announce U.S. Tour

The closest they get to St. Louis is Chicago though.

So Matt Costa was one of those Jack Johnson clones (on JJ's label at that) that were popping up everywhere 8-10 years ago. I hadn't heard anything for years. But I just heard his 2013 self-titled album. It's full of horns and strings and interesting arrangements. I really enjoyed it.

Good story on Clark Terry, recently-departed STL musician with a lot of history and accomplishment.

Clark Terry said he heard the sound of jazz everywhere as a kid in St. Louis in the 1930s: on the radio, in parades and wafting in from river boats floating along the Mississippi River.

He came up with his own sound in a junkyard with a homemade trumpet. In 1995, he described it on the NPR program Billy Taylor's Jazz at the Kennedy Center.

"I made it from an old discarded garden hose — I had it bound up like a trumpet, with an old piece of kerosene funnel, made it look like a bell," he said, laughing. "Then I put a piece of old lead pipe on the end, that was my mouthpiece. I couldn't make any music with it but I sure made a lot of noise with it!"

I saw them right after they reunited in 2004, and it was great - they just plowed through their best material. I worry that if you saw them today, they'd want to play their new album. Which...is not good.

Regarding Mumford and Son's newest album:

On their new album, Wilder Mind (out May 4th), Mumford & Sons have mostly removed their signature elements – banjo, acoustic strumming, stomping kick drum – and replaced them with U2-sized guitars, synths, spacey mellotrons and even some drum machines. "We felt that doing the same thing, or the same instrumentation again, just wasn’t for us," says frontman Marcus Mumford. "We’ve got a broader taste in music than just that." Adds Dwane, "None of us had really any interest in doing a sort of Babel 2. It was always going to be different."
