I watched the The Last Kingdom series on netflix. It's a Game of Throneish show about the battles between the Anglo-Saxons and the Danes in England during 9th century AD. It isn't historically accurate but it does include some real historical figures and I think it's interesting to see the 9th century time period depicted on flim. The show isn't perfect, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. Surprisingly my wife enjoyed it too.

I also watched the first episode of Lady Dynamite. Wow, this show is weird and I’m not completely sure what to make of it. I’m going to try another episode, but I fear it’s a show I will respect more than I actually enjoy.

The Get Down on Netflix was pretty fun. Like anything Baz Luhrmann, who I'm normally not a big fan of, it's campy and silly and over-the-top more often than not, but contains a handful of musical numbers that are visceral and just kind of great and classic Luhrmann--when we go to The Get Down for the first time and see Grandmaster Flash, the last big musical number with the crew rap-battling The Tremendous Three in the Bronx, Jaden Smith's trip to SoHo to a anything-goes nightclub. Shameik Moore (he was the lead in Dope, which I loved) is really fun as Shaolin Fantastic, a graffiti artist obsessed with Kung-Fu who is a protege of Grandmaster Flash and trying to become a world-class DJ.

Stranger Things is mostly brilliant but there are a little too many unpolished moments for me to really fall in love. Though it could just be my aversion to formulaic plotlines.

I've come around to loving Lady Dynamite. After the first episode it really gets in to a groove. Highly recommended.

I feel like The Night Of is going to end next week w/ Nas getting off, the real murderer being found, and then the point is going to be that once you've been through the meat grinder of the justice system you're not the same. If so, I wish they'd freed him in last night's episode, put the dead girl's dead mom's skeevy ex in jail, and then spent the last episode showing us Nas on the outside.

I kind of think he may get killed in prison. Or get off and end up committing a violent crime and going back in. With the same point of not being the same once you are in the system.

I'm looking forward to the finale though. I just hope it's not a big let down where he gets off, returns home, and everything is rainbows and unicorns (shout out to our new mod).
