Re: Recently viewed movies
the only Woody Allen pic I've seen is "Matchpoint" which I enjoyed - ahh Scarlett. I may try some others in addition to Vicky Cristy Barcelona - how about a short list of Woody Allen must-sees?
over the weekend saw the old classic "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre"
It was an entertaining film with great acting by Bogart, Tim Holt and Walt Huston (director John Huston's father) who steals the show IMO.
Some aspects of the film that made it such an achievement in its era are familiar and mundane today. Back then it was apparantly a big deal to shoot parts of a film in the locale its set in (though not a big deal for Hitchcock), rather than on a movie studio lot. So even though it was cool to see an old movie using those techniques, its not such a big deal now. Somewhat a predictable story line, and maybe a bit too long. but still I give it the thumbs up.

Interesting. I like both of your tastes in movies so I'm curious to see who I'll agree with here. I've been trying to watch this all night but OnDemand keeps giving me an error message.clement wrote:I completely disagree.omaha_red wrote:vicky cristina barcelona was terrible.

My list of Woody Allen films you must see. (from oldest to newest)Freed Roger wrote:the only Woody Allen pic I've seen is "Matchpoint" which I enjoyed - ahh Scarlett. I may try some others in addition to Vicky Cristy Barcelona - how about a short list of Woody Allen must-sees?
Take The Money & Run
Bananas
Play It Again, Sam (he didn't direct but it's basically a Woody Allen film)
Love and Death
Annie Hall
Manhattan
Radio Days
Mighty Aphrodite
and to a lesser extent, Sweet and Lowdown
Keep in mind I've only seen a few of his films in the last 15 years.

Dude, "Pans Labyrinth" had best knock me on my ass because it's next in my queue.G. Keenan wrote:Interesting. I like both of your tastes in movies so I'm curious to see who I'll agree with here. Out of the blue..."The Diving Bell And The Butterfly" was outstanding. I'm trying to think of a film from the past year that left a greater impression and can't.
/Batman, Ironman, Transformers...all the same

That surprises me coming from a movie geek like you!Freed Roger wrote:the only Woody Allen pic I've seen is "Matchpoint".
My list is somewhat different than Richie's with more emphasis on his serious stuff than his funnies; roughly in order my favorites are:
Annie Hall
Crimes and Misdemeanors
Manhattan
Hannah & Her Sisters
Deconstructing Harry
After these 5, I'd also put in a good word for Husbands and Wives, Bananas, Interiors, Another Woman, Play it Again Sam, Broadway Danny Rose, Love & Death. Many of the others are still worth seeing, Matchpoint among them (though C&D is the better movie on a similar theme). For me, Vicky Cristina probably also belongs in this group just below my very favorites. Don't Drink the Water is another funny one, and Purple Rose of Cairo is also quite nice. Alice ain't bad too. Radio Days,... Stardust Memories is fascinating if a little stilted. Virtually all of his movies are worth seeing with the exception of a few of the newest ones (Celebrity is horrible, so is Hollywood Ending) and one or two of the old ones (September).
Pans Labyrinth is indeed wonderful. Loved "Diving Bell" too. I'm no Batman freak by any stretch, but it's not the same thing is Transformers. (haven't seen Iron Man yet)Tambourine Man wrote:Dude, "Pans Labyrinth" had best knock me on my ass because it's next in my queue.

More than a week later, and The Wrestler is still in my head.

many many woody allen movies and have grown to enjoy his stuff.. but this
one just did nothing for me.. maybe "terrible" is a bit harsh.. i'll take that back..
but i saw nothing there to deem it anything more than a "slightly" above average
chick flick..

Re: Recently viewed movies
For me, the dividing line with Woody Allen is pretty much whether or not he's in the film. If he's in the film, I'm going to enjoy it a lot less than if he's not in the film.
My favorites:
-Crimes and Misdemeanors
-Interiors
-Everything You Wanted to Know about Sex (which is an exception to my "If he's in the movie" rule)
-Match Point
-Cassandra's Dream
-Love and Death
If you liked Match Point, I'd definitely check out Cassandra's Dream.
