Re: 2014 World Cup
Injuries and rest will be a concern for them. The awful weather and field conditions amplifies that. Also, Germany wants to win the group. The easiest way to accomplish all of that is to play defensively and not let the US have many scoring chances.AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote:Realistically, what type of game should we expect? Germany doesn't really need to be conservative considering how big of a GD lead they hold over Ghana and especially Portugal. Even if they lose, they're still likely to get through. A lot easier for them to play their style of game and not worry about a loss. The US, otoh, doesn't have the GD cushion. Will they be willing to play their game, as well, knowing a loss really opens them up for an early exit?
I could envision a game where both teams are thinking defense first and wait for counter attacks. Then, since neither team is driving down the pitch and being aggressive, there are few counters. Germany's skill alone will create scoring opportunities. They don't have to be crazy aggressive to put the ball in the net. But, neither does the US. I don't think the US sends Fabian Johnson on runs up the wing. They'll be content to try and control the ball in the midfield and settle for long range shots and rebound opportunities. I wouldn't be shocked if the US gets Yedlin into the game for Zusi pretty early. Maybe at half.

The rain is going to cause a 0-0- tie. ESPN paid to seed the clouds for the USA

Omar & Davis are head scratchers. It does give CDM cover with Cam on the bench. Clearly the attack is coming through the right flank and Davis is there to defend and deliver set pieces but his speed is a liability on the bigger half of that equation.
Obviously regardless of formation/selection, that German lineup would dwarf it on paper.
