On this date in 1995, after 5 1/2 seasons with the A's, Giants, and Red Sox, Willie McGee signed a free-agent deal to return to the Cardinals. He played four more seasons in St. Louis, including two in which he hit .300 or higher.

On this date in 1988, the Cardinals traded Curt Ford and Steve Lake to the Phillies for outfielder Milt Thompson. Thompson hit .290 or higher in three of his four seasons in St. Louis:

I remember being stoked when I heard about it. In hindsight it was the beginning of the end for the Jocketty era.

Thursday will mark 17 years since the Cardinals signed David Eckstein on December 23, 2004. Less than two years later, Eckstein won the 2006 World Series MVP Award:
