They did well. I could see where someone would criticize the Schenn trade but it basically boils down to giving up a 1st for him and a 1st for taking on Lehtera's contract. It's not a premium 1st being given up. I'm in favor of it.

#27 overall
#51 overall

Some scouting agencies had Kostin as the #1 Euro skater. Probably only slid because of the Russia factor.
i know nothing about him to be honest, but he apparently had a season ending shoulder injury sometime last year, and hasn't played since...could be another reason why he slid?
The St. Louis Blues have taken Klim Kostin with the 31st overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.
St. Louis acquired this pick along with Oskar Sundqvist from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Ryan Reaves and the 51st overall selection. Kostin was seen as one of the riskier prospects in this draft, but only because he was projected to go much higher than this. At 31st overall, this could actually be seen as a steal. The 18-year-old has good size (6-foot-3, 195 pounds) and skill, but he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury over in Russia last year and he hasn’t played since. On top of that, whenever he has played in the professional ranks in his country, he hasn’t really been productive. Kostin had just one goal in nine games in Russia’s second division in 2016-17 and no points and 27 penalty minutes in eight games in the KHL. Kostin wore the "C" for his country during the Ivan Hlinka tournament, where he posted seven points in five games.

The Reaves trade was a clear win.
I think you have to take both trades in consideration at the same time.
I'm not positive Armstrong would have done 2 1st rounds picks for Schenn straight up. But he was able to acquire a scoring forward, keep 2 first round picks, and ditch Lehtera's contract in exchange for a protected 1st next year and Ryan Reaves.
That's pretty impressive to me and I seriously doubt the philly trade would have been made without the other.

According to St. Louis Game Time, the Reaves deal had been in the works for a while, which is part of the reason he was protected from Vegas.
So basically they protect Reaves, shed Perron's salary, get a ton of value for Reaves and dump Jori for a much better player. The cost to do all this? Move back four spots in the 1st, a second round pick, and another first that won't be a premier pick.
Holy crap I chose the wrong year to not follow the draft stuff live.
So yeah, i'm over the moon. Is giving up 2 firsts a lot to swap Schenn and Lehtera, yes, but swapping Lehtera for Schenn really gives the Blues a chance to compete next year, in prime Tarasenko and Pietrangelo years, instead of waiting for crappy contracts to end. I think this is going to be a big deal. Our depth looks a LOT better with Schenn and without Lehtera.
And how the [expletive] did we swap Reaves (who I love, but isn't a guy you build around) and a late 2nd for Kostin? (not to mention getting a 4th liner back) Kostin is a crazy talented Russian who fell in the draft due to (seemingly overblown) signability concerns... sounds like when we traded Runbland for the 16th pick back in 2010. That pick turned out okay.
So yeah, some creative, gutsy moves, and the Blues might have room to do something else. Just wow. We are better now than at the end of the season.
I'd love to sign a better top 6 guy to let Steener be a rockin amazing 3rd liner, but I don't expect much. That's a pretty solid top 6. Especially if Barbashev can be a good 2nd line center after Stastny leaves.
I had heard Justin Williams name mentioned as a possibility before, but that was before the Schenn trade. I don't know if it still is, but that really makes the team deep.
Williams would be incredible. I'm drooling over those possibilities. That looks like a team with enough depth to contend. 4 good lines. Last year we had 2 and 1/2 good lines. ish.
