What happened to the team that drafted Appel last year? Do they get any sort of extra pick since they didn't sign Appel?

Yeah, I think PIT gets the pick 1 spot lower than where they failed to sign him last year. Someone else can confirm that, though.

If this is true, and assuming no penalties for not signing a guy way over slot, I hope the Cards take MAnaea and don't sign him due to his demands and then get an extra pick next year.

Right. Seems like a huge loophole.

Of course, I said the same thing with Cox. Thought they should have offered him a slot bonus and when he rejected it, give that money they had allotted and give it to Wilson (? iirc) and take an extra pick in the 1st round the next year. But that didn't happen and Cox brought Mujica...so it worked out. I guess.

I see us drafting a pitcher at 19 also. It just seems to be what this organization is built on. I see maybe a shortstop or outfielder at 28.

This draft has some interesting college arms and some decent prep bats. Other than that, this year is worse than last year. So if we can position ourselves better for next year it might be a good idea. Also could get another pick with Beltran leaving. We could essentially have 3 picks in and around the 1st 30 chances, right?

How accurate can one forecast the following year's draft class? Seems like there would be a lot of variables to account for and you're losing a year of development time (everything else being equal).

I would watch the draft but MLB Network seems to be in its impossible to view mode that happens a lot with my cable, for some reason. HD channel won't load at all and even the SD channel is all broken up and pixelated.

I'll just watch the game and track the draft on my phone or something.

Kind of a time value of money thing where a player today is worth more than a player later in a supposed better draft. Plus, your employment may still not be there to even make the pick.

Keith Law did a good job of talking about this in his chat today.

Plus, don't forget that if you don't sign the player, you lose the bonus money from his slot and that can change your entire draft.
