It was a really entertaining book about life in the minor leagues from a relievers point of view. It dips into a few other non baseball related issues & is really a nice, easy book to read and like I said is really entertaining.

Re: Book thread
Reading this now.

The prologue is about the 1918 World Series and the Red Sox returning by train to Boston for Game 3. They stop in Ohio and a restless Babe Ruth finds a pickup game in progress among black players. Pretty soon the other Sox and Cubs find him and join in. The main plot is switching back and forth between a Boston cop and Luther, one of the black players, who is currently living in Tulsa. Both cities are fighting the terrible flu epidemic of the times and there is an impending police strike.
I'm only on page 200, but it's been a compelling read so far. First thing I've read by Dennis Lehane who has also written Mystic River and Shutter Island, but will likely not be the last.

I'm about 40 pages in, and so far I have to agree (disappointing, because I hold The Corrections in the highest esteem).2nd Timer wrote:It hasn't lived up to a Time magazine cover after 150 pages.heyzeus wrote:Has anyone else started the new Jonathan Franzen novel, "Freedom?"
You know how your high school english teacher would tell you that you should be showing, and not telling, when you write? So far this book is all telling. "Here's a broad brush caricature of an insufferable, busybody lefty know-it-all mom and her catty neighbors."

Book 13 of the Wheel of Time series, Towers of Midnight, being written by Brandon Sanderson with segments from the late Robert Jordan, is scheduled for a 11/2 release date. There is a video trailer of the book available on dragonmount.com if any fellow WoT fans out there want to watch it.

Re: Book thread
I went to a Jonathan Franzen book signing this weekend. He was just as socially awkward yet strident as you'd expect and hope. I told him I was from St Louis too and he didn't even ask me where I went to high school. Very disappointing. He may be a James Frye-style impostor, in fact.

Author of This book is making the rounds on sports talk radio.

Sounds pretty good, even to a Vikings fan who's young heart was broken by these Raiders.
Definitely a bygone era of football.
