Because he did all of this as a 2B in a fairly non-offensive era.Phyrkrakr wrote:Frankly, I don't know HOW he got in. A career .285 hitter with < .800 OPS and 2300 hits doesn't strike me as HoF caliber, especially with the Cubbies' postseason futility. 9 Gold Gloves were the only reason I could come up with. At this point, Scott Rolen is going to beat most of that, except maybe average if his falls off a cliff (he's currently a .285 hitter)Wekse5 wrote:you think sandberg got in based solely on his defense?Phyrkrakr wrote:Except for Ryne Sandberg...TimeForGuinness wrote:I've said it before and I'll say it again: Ozzie will be the last person to get into the HOF based on his defense. (Yes he had some offense, but he got in for his GGs)
Rolen and Edmonds will have a hard time getting in. IMHO.

By putting him in w/ those names, how again does he not make the HOF?haltz wrote:Maybe seventh or eighth. Not top five. Speaker, Cobb, Mays, Mantle, DiMaggio, Griffey and maybe Snider.GatewaySnayke wrote:Edmonds just doesn't have the counting stats that writers love, but I don't think there's any doubt that he's one of the top five center fielders ever.

Not saying that he shouldn't. I am a pretty big advocate of it actually.cardinalkarp wrote:By putting him in w/ those names, how again does he not make the HOF?haltz wrote:Maybe seventh or eighth. Lloyd Waner, Hack Wilson, Richie Ashburn, Kirby Puckett, Earle Combs, Max Carey...

Darn, I forgot about Tris Speaker, and I thought Cobb played one of the corner positions.haltz wrote:Maybe seventh or eighth. Not top five. I think it's really a coin flip between Edmonds and Snider, going off of OPS+, and looking at Edmonds and Jr's lines, they are pretty similar as well. Of course, Jr has 500 home runs...

Yeah, you know Junior will be a first ballot guy. Snider and Edmonds are starting to look similar offensively, like I mentioned earlier I think. Edmonds has him with the glovework too, by a long shot. It's just that pesky 400 HR. Hopefully Ballgame does something about that over the rest of his contract.GatewaySnayke wrote:I think it's really a coin flip between Edmonds and Snider, going off of OPS+, and looking at Edmonds and Jr's lines, they are pretty similar as well.
