Re: Getting into shape
I definitely get more exercise in the summer because of farm work. There is always some manual labor I need to do. Winter time I have to find it myself. For example Friday I basically stood at a work bench and re built planter units all day. Hardly hard work.
I'm fairly ashamed of myself right now. This last week I've just completely fallen off the wagon. I haven't done as much exercise and I've eaten and drank like crap. I rarely drink beer but this week I've been drinking beer. Soda, yeah ok I drink soda once every two day but this week I've downed a case of pepsi. Looking back it was not a good week and I feel it right now.

I wish it was easier to find a basketball game where everyone wasn't being such an ahole.

Re: Getting into shape
Presidents Day means more young kids - HS age - in the gym than usual. What I have noticed about these kids is they drink and eat weird [expletive]. They have gallon milk jugs of stuff that I imagine was an expensive powder bought in a health store.
I've gone old school with my nutrition. On my lifting days I bring a cup of coffee with sugar. It takes me 10 minutes or so to really get going, I ease into my lifting to not injure myself, and while I do that I down the coffee. Once I get going really good I drink this stuff called water. They have a fountain that dispenses it just far enough away where it's a good walk between sets.
I used to eat Power Bars and the like when I cycled until I realized my body feels just as good with a Snickers bar, and it taste better. Only advantage of the Power Bars is they don't melt. Otherwise, I think Snickers does the job. Power Bars and the like are a bowl full of marketing crap more than anything.

They do that at our place too. Most of them don't look like they have any sort of fitness level that is enviable-even to an old fart like me. There's a few exceptions - like a few that live at the gym.jim wrote: What I have noticed about these kids is they drink and eat weird [expletive]. a lot of them are hoping there's some magic out there. Spend your way into shape. Our stepdaughter has some of that drink mix at our house now. The labeling cracks me up - it's ultrabioavailable sustained assimilation formula ya know. aka Whey.

Re: Getting into shape
The two 17-18 year olds I saw were not in very good looking shape.
The other thing I have noticed with middle aged guys it the wardrobes. Jesus Christ they look like they walked right out of a fitness magazine photo shoot - except for their flabby guts. I wear the same shirt every day to lift - sleeves cut out and it's baggy. Property of St. Louis Cardinals shirt that at one time was red. It's shredding now, I think it's 5-6 years old, and it's literally just coming apart. I figure it's only got another year or so of hard use left. It's comfortable, I can move any direction without any binding. I don't even understand what is under some of those shirts people are wearing - it looks like padding or something. I'm not sure what that does, but it looks expensive, unnecessary, and uncomfortable to me.
I don't like Dri-fit things because they really stink to high heaven when you get lathered up. I can't even stand myself in those things after a good workout. I just like cotton t-shirts.

Re: Getting into shape
I've done it very slowly. Over about 3 years. I have gradually tried to change or eliminate a bad habit or so every 6 months.
I'm sorry guys. I'll eat lots of gravy this weekend.
Not to worry. I have a lot more to lose before I am Skinny_Bulldog. If I do change my name, you know I'm keeping the underscore for the compliments I get on it.

FWIW - your gravy train threads haven't taken it the distance since then.Fat_Bulldog wrote:I've done it very slowly. Over about 3 years.
