you could try heading down to Brentwood and looking at Whole Foods, that's where I get mine.JackofDiamonds wrote:Anyone had the Schlafly Reserve Barleywine or whatever it's called? I picked up a bottle when I was home for Christmas, it's sitting in my wine fridge now.
By the way, where do people buy good beer in North County? I tried 5 or 6 places last week and couldn't find anything.

Stone is not available in STL and the local hopheads are not happy that they are going to Europe- to build a brewery- before entering the Missouri market.cardinalkarp wrote:Rad, I've actually tried that one as well but if I remember correctly it was when I was on the west coast (in California). I'm not sure if it's available in the stl area. I do remember it being very good though. I actually try to save a bottle (empty of course) from every different one I try, that way I can remember if I've tried it & if it's any good.Radbird wrote:I know I've mentioned this before, Karp, but in case you missed it during your posting sabbatical, here's my favorite IPA.

My man at Ball Square Fine Wines & Liquors in Boston has everything. I hadn't been home (St. Louis) in almost 2 years and was freaking out over the beer selection in Florissant/Hazelwood. Then I remembered that grocery stores can carry beer and went to the Schnucks on Lindbergh and New Halls Ferry. At least there were choices.lukethedrifter wrote:Stone is not available in STL and the local hopheads are not happy that they are going to Europe- to build a brewery- before entering the Missouri market.cardinalkarp wrote:Rad, I've actually tried that one as well but if I remember correctly it was when I was on the west coast (in California). I've never seen Schlafly up here though, where do they distribute?

Re: The Beer Thread
from their FAQ page
Why can't I get Schlafly Beer in my area?
Schlafly Beer is dedicated to serving the freshest beer available to a local market. To that end, we have a very strict quality standard and we limit our distribution to approximately 3 to 4 driving hours from our breweries – our definition of "local." If you are within that distance, it may be that we haven't found a distributor that is able to store our beer cold or live up to our high standards. We won't sacrifice quality for volume sales

Lame. The only Schlafly available at two the crappy liquor stores I tried was the Summer Seasonal. Slightly older than 4 hours.lukethedrifter wrote:from their FAQ page

Fly me some Barleywine and Hefeweizen Schlafly, I'll even wait a few hours to drink it.

Rogue Dead Guy Ale is pretty good beer. Kind of a medium body beer. Rogue beers I've tried have a unique flavor - a slightly sweet aftertaste that I like. Rogue can be on the expensive side - but found one 6pack discounted to clear out.
And I managed to try that Bud Select 55 calorie travesty. Just terrible. Tastes like a club soda. I was trying to imagine if it could work as a beer-quencher on blazing hot days. Hell No. I wasn't paying attention, but I guess that it took me at least a half-hour to force this down.
But for the weight conscious that's an extra bonus - lower calories and stifles your desire to have another.
On the Schlafly front - they had throngs of people at Maplewood brewery last Sat. - not sure what was going down. Their Winter ESB has become a favorite beer of mine. I better stock up before the season ends.

My boyfriend wanted to know what "Stag" was because he had seen signs on taverns around here (apparently they only sell Stag in Missouri and Illinois?) and we bought him some last night. It was surprisingly not that bad.

I bought a sixer of Bell's Hopslam last week. Oh boy is it good. It's pricey at something like $16-17 for a six-pack, so despite how good it is, the price means it's far from a bargain. That said, there's a darn good chance I'll buy another sixer when it comes out again next year.
