I honestly didn't mean it to be easier or more difficult. Just different.

Some players like small schools, others like state schools. I would argue more would enjoy the large state school experience over the small, private schools. That is a different dynamic, and it will be interesting to see if he sees any difference.

That statement was part of a larger post detailing some of the differences between the two schools and I felt I'd be remiss to not point out he's going from a tiny, private school in a large city, to a large state school in the middle of Missouri.

I'm far from a Mizzou homer, as I'm not from Missouri and have never rooted for them in any capacity.

All I'm saying is that as far as academics go, Miami is about average for the conference it is in. Duke, Virginia, BC, UNC, GT, Maryland, VT, Wake Forest--all very good universities at or above Miami's level. Mizzou is right around average for the Big 12 as well. Miami can't really use the academics excuse for not doing well in the ACC. They just have crappier players.

I've never been to the U. It could be in the slums of Miami for all I know. Maybe it is really tough to convince players to go to a school of 10k in southern Florida. I would think it would be tougher to get a kid from Texas or Florida to pack up and move to central Missouri, but maybe I'm wrong on that.

The recruiting angle is simple. Haith needs to lock down StL and steal some talent out of KC from KU. It really has little to do with academics.

Pop, I was referring to Cards with the homer. You're basically right with the academic quality for many ACC teams (other than Florida State), Duke is a cut above, Virginia, Miami, Wake are next tier, and Maryland is solid along with BC.

It's silly for me to go back and forth over something trivial as this. I originally wasn't arguing anything about Miami vs. anyone else, and surprised that comment has sparked do much angst or objection. Anyone can have their definition of elite, and if others isn't a top-50 school, no worries.

Haith has recruited to Texas and also Wake (I believe), is a likable dude, and as long as he can win some games, you'll like him.

Coral Gables is where Miami is located. It's a ritzy suburb of Miami (45 minutes or so away when we drove it). Cool campus, big lake in middle, highway that kind of encircles the community. Campus is sort of its own little community.

I'm hoping Haith is down here in the Sikeston area as we speak. Locking up Porter could be big for the future of recruiting in Missouri, even if it really is about as much of a lock as there could be with an in-state kid.

For like the tenth time, no one has ever said Miami isn't a good/great/elite school. The entire point all along is that Haith will not see any tangible difference at Mizzou in the kind of players he can recruit based on academics. Especially in basketball where you are only talking 3-4 guys a year and especially for athletes where the admission standards aren't the same as the average student except at a handful of schools that have already been covered.

I'm pretty amused that you would call me a Mizzou homer though. If anything, I get called out for being overly pessimistic (even for a Mizzou fan) by the real homers I work with. I'll remind you that I'm the guy that argued against Blaine Gabbert being worthy of a top 10 pick. I didn't go there, and I only care about seeing the football and basketball team achieve moderate success, that's it. I couldn't care less what yours or anyone else's opinion is of the school academically. I simply follow college sports closely enough to know that academic standards are pretty much last on the list of factors when it comes to landing a recruit for almost any school. I went to a top 100, private school 1/3rd the size of Miami and there was no shortage of dumbass athletes and easy classes for them there. We didn't lose recruits because we were too good of a school, it was simply because we weren't good enough on the field to attract their attention.

Well, Haith couldn't reel in Porter. He's going to Georgetown. I would have felt a lot better if Haith had been down here last Thursday. Oh well. Can't blame the kid. At least it's not Kansas.
