I bet Verizon won when they walked the check to a computer scientist down the hall and did the calculation to verify the amount matched the customer invoice, then deposited the check that same day. The customer was expecting to get a letter back but all he/she got was a text message the next day saying monies had been withdrawn.
Those odds makers are really, really stupid. On September 12th the Cardinals were 4.5 games out of the wild card.

What was our playoff percentage at that point? If you assume we were about a 40/60 underdog to the Phillies and a 45/55 underdog in the subsequent series, we had to be just a little under 1% to make the playoffs on that date for 1000 to 1 to be a reasonable line.

Cool Standings had them just under 6% to make the playoffs on the 12th. Given the sentiment at the time, maybe they gave higher odds to try and draw action to that side?
