Anyone watch Starfleet Academy? The first ep was better than I expected. A buddy of mine’s take is, imo, spot on, that it “hits YA beats but is a show that knows what it wants to be” and that “Star Trek is a place” and that this fits in this place. Very solid.

It's on my watch list but I haven't gotten to it yet. There is something appealing about Holy Hunter being the captain from what I've gathered from the trailers. And Paul Giamatti looks like he's going full Shatner with the overacting. Might be fun.

Anyone catch Section 31? I thought it looked bad and had skipped it, but my buddy convinced me to watch it. He said, “You may one day want to have watched all of Star Trek, and I’d hate for Section 31 to be the capstone.”

It was a mess. Not good. High stakes but boring. Poorly written imo. The only good thing that came out of that evening was the brisket and the scotch. (And I guess the fact that this mess of a movie won’t ever be my Trek capstone)

Yeah the Section 31 movie was not great. Which was a bummer because I like Michelle Yeoh.

I like Starfleet Academy so far. Episode 1 was a nice start. 2 was a little dull but episode 3 was fun.

I have a slight problem with that

Dax was already an old man if you pardon my Sisko. Canon indicates the symbiont was 300 or so during DS9 and their life Diana are usually about 600. SF Academy takes place 800 years after DS9. I'm sure they could do some kind of explanation but it's kind of sloppy just for the sake of some fan service imo. I did enjoy the episode though.

One other the on Dax... Why does the host have to be some trill hybrid version? Don't they have enough of those in this series?

I thought I read that they could live up to 800 but also a lot of tech.

I think it makes sense that it’s Dax from a narrative standpoint. Who else would keep the flame for Sisko alive and who else would have the only copy of Anselum? For that reason I think it works.

Also I didn’t see it coming at all but in retrospect Tawny Newsome was channeling Jadzia in a bunch of subtle ways.

Also seeing Cirric Lofton warmed my heart. He was excellent in his scenes.

I am really enjoying SFA. It feels like they are showing us how the bonds that made Kirk-Spock-McCoy etc, so iconic and moving… they’re showing us how those bonds form, and why they last. Why after decades, Riker still says, “Wherever you go Jean-Luc, we go.” Why after centuries Dax still keeps Sisko’s memory alive.

I’m looking forward to the Paul Giamatti plot to pick back up, probably with a “War College and Starfleet have to work together to defeat the big bad” plot that we can all see coming but it will still work because its about the people more than the plot.

Also you know we are getting a Doctor ep and I can’t wait for Roberto Picardo to get center stage.

Also season 3 of Picard was, imo (which I know isn’t the most popular) the least interesting plot of the series, (You’re telling me a 24th century Chief Medical Officer of the Federation flagship had a secret oopsie baby? A 24th century doctor?) and to me was ALL fan service. (Also why was D suddenly able to maneuver like a fighter jet?) I still love it though and don’t care about those concerns, so what do I know? lol.
