This is a good question. But, going to any gym will give you an idea of how lazy people are when working out. Re-racking incorrectly racked weights alone would be a workout. I never understood it. It takes, what, 5 seconds to correctly put back weights correctly. It takes, what, 10 seconds to move weights to a correct rack then rack your weights correctly. Yet...there are weights all over the place. God damnit people.
There are definitely some people who go to my gym as much for the social as working out. My place is a non-chain place that has been there for 25+ years - and alot of people there have been members that long. There is a large lounge area on the first floor with free coffee and plenty of places to plop down and socialize. I've seen people hanging out in the lounge when I get in, and still there in the same damn seat when I leave an hour and a half later. People bring in food, etc.. and make a morning of it.
I've always been a big guy. I hit 200 lbs in 8th or 9th grade. As a fairly active college kid, I was sitting at around 240. But after college, I found a desk job, married life, and stagnation. My weight has been creeping up for years. I hit 300 lbs in my late 20s. I got back under that for a couple of years, but it started creeping up again. I am now hovering around 350 (I am 6'1"). I need to do *something*.
Back around the time I managed to get under 300, I was eating better and exercising some. I had found that I liked rowing, but going to the gym was a pain. We live in WBF, and it's an hour and a half out of my evening, with travel time, just to get in a 30 minute workout. So yesterday, I dropped a wad on the Concept2 D rowing machine. It should arrive Friday. Hopefully this is the first step to getting my weight and health back under control.
I'm 5 minutes from a great gym. It happens to be on my way to work as well. There is no way I could do what I do without the gym. It's an expensive place - I think it's $80 a month or something for one (we pay like $120 to put my wife and kid on it), but it's worth every penny. I would hate to be far from a place, I have worked out at home but I do better getting out. One thing that is a great workout that I do have setup at home is a heavy bag and speed bag station, with some gloves and wraps. I've stopped doing it but I really got myself into pretty good shape using the bags.

This sounds dumb, but the key for me is to cut back on booze. I make really poor food choices when I'm drinking. The poor choices are compounded if I'm hungover the next day. If I only moderately drink once a week the weight just falls right off of me.
Help me GRB! The fat kid wants to drink beer tonight!

You're not going to do much damage, if any, in one night.
