Last May we adopted a 3rd miniature dachsund from a shelter who had been found on a rural road with paralyzed hind legs but got better in the shelter after treatment with acupuncture- must have had a ruptured disc. All 3 are very appreciative of having a home.

My roommate's german shepherd gains about 7 lbs a day and uses my legs to teeth when I'm not looking. I let him out just now because I feel bad about the thing being cooped up in a cage, and he sounds like he's just running full speed into walls in the living room. Hopefully he'll just take himself out soon.

The black one, Darby, was found crawling with his forepaws on a road near Santa Barbara with infections from worn away skin. He made an almost complete recovery in the shelter, his hind legs are a little weak, he will lose balance sometimes but his front legs are very strong- we had to trim a hedge in the back yard to keep him from climbing it using his front legs. Our son worked at that shelter and told my wife to adopt him. Besides acupuncture they would hold him in a tub of water to get him to move his legs around.
The one in the middle is not a pure dachsund- he was the first one we got. He had been on the street, when we adopted him he was filthy and scrawny and had yellowish fur which turned brown with better nutrition. He knew how to tip over garbage cans.
The one on the right is a female who I think lived in an apartment because she chose a rug to use as a bathroom at first and didn't know what to do on walks. She was well cared for, I think somebody died or ran out of money and that's how she got to the shelter.

We're really debating adding another cat to our household or getting a dog for the first time. I know most of you are dog people, but we do really love cats. Either way, we want to save an animal from a shelter (no pure bred, high $ pet for us) and we want a kitten or puppy. I think a young dog or cat will fit in right away because they're dumb and happy go-lucky without the attitude. Luckily, Mr. Planet works from home so he has time to help with potty training duties. I grew up with dogs and cats. We also don't have a preference, nor experience regarding the pros and cons of different dog breeds.

Cat Pros:

Fit right into a household of felines
Low maintenance - no walks, we can leave them for weekends/long weekends with no worries

Cat Cons:

More litter to change?
?

Dog Pros:

A different type of pet, more enthusiastically loving?
Having recently experiencing a break in, potentially a security benefit
They can ride along in cars and accompany you to parks
More loyal

Dog Cons:

Frequent walks in this godawful cold and blistering heat
Less vacation freedom and potentially more expense
With three cats, we won't be able to get him/her a canine companion soon
Will he/she get along with our cats? We love our cats and don't want to make life uneasy for them
Puppies potentially more destructive
