First in two centuries? Seriously?Vidor wrote:Man sees sign not to go swimming in the water because there's a huge alligator in there. Bystanders tell man don't go swimming, there's a huge alligator in there. Man says F that alligator. Nature has its revenge.

Re: The Official WTF Thread
if you don't want to read my soapboxy bullcrap then just ignore me.
But just in case you want to have some honest dialogue
Why should it matter if a 7 year old's tummy is showing? We don't hold our little boys to the same standard. When a girl looks around and sees her mother, sister, and friends wearing bikinis but is made to cover her tummy, all a 7 year old is going to think is that her body, as a female, is something to be ashamed of, something that needs to be covered. It's the kind of thing that feeds into the slut shaming and victim blaming later on in her life. The whole concept that a 7 year old's tummy is something that needs to be covered contributes a lot more to the hypersexualization of young girls than the actual act of showing it.
It's not about being "englightened," it's about being cognizant of the message we are sending young women/girls by policing their bodies.

I was unclear. I was bothered by the fact the suit came with a top, not by the fact that it didn't have a middle. 7-year-old boys can just wear swim trunks to the pool, why can't girls? I actually agree with you.Schlich wrote:if you don't want to read my soapboxy bullcrap then just ignore me.

I understand what you are saying but...
I didn't see vidor's daughter's swimming suit so I probably shouldn't have commented. I did see the one my daughter wanted to get and it was- to me - too overtly sexual(izing?). All bikinis were not created equal.
Otherwise I (think) I agree with what (I think) you are saying. It's very important to me that my daughter is comfortable with herself, her body, and her sexuality.
