I tried intermittent fasting once... i found it was too hard for me to get ENOUGH calories so I had to stop. If you're looking to eat a deficit, this is probably something worth trying. 8-hour eating windows.Freed Roger wrote:Funny -I probably sample some of Tim Ferriss methods -though I can't say for sure because I haven't directly read his material. A lot of these fitness people have similar ideas, some taking it to extreme or claiming they invented something obvious.Transmogrified Tiger wrote: Freed's favorite person Tim Ferriss .
Occassionally I'll do some of the "life hacks" that I think Ferriss is proponent of - boost metabolism with some fasting (like 12 hours between eating), cold showers (I think this works TBH), sneaking a little exercise at work. Other than stress, my busy season is good for my health, because of the regimentation, my convenience food is lots of nuts, protein bars.
There are so many things that work -some of it contradictory to other. Just find what works for yourself, -this finding out is part of the process-involves paying attention, even logging the info. Whatever it is, just need the motivation to see it thru. ...same thing others have said.

Aaaand we have new women's beer mile record holder. Chris Kimbrough 44 year old mother of 6
http://www.flotrack.org/coverage/251607 ... IoUzblujIUBeer mile is a drinking race combining running and speed drinking. Typically, the race takes place on a standard 400 meter or 1/4 mile running track. The race begins at the 1-mile starting line with the consumption of a standard amount of beer, followed by a full lap around the track. The second lap continues in a similar manner; the standard amount of beer is consumed before commencing the running of the second lap. This process is repeated for the next two laps. Following the completion of the fourth running lap (and four beers), a competitor has finished the race. More specific rules of the race vary by region.
North American tradition
In North America, typically, 12 US ounces of beer is consumed from an aluminum can before every lap.[1][2] Since the advent of the internet, the rules of the Beer Mile have become more standardized, particularly in the United States and Canada.[3]

Re: Getting into shape
I still have this back thing which is definitely slowing me down some. I'm generally good through the day. A twinge here and pain there, but if I stand in one place for more then a minute it's full on pain.
I know I said it earlier in the thread but Yoga has been absolutely key to getting through my days with the back pain. We started doing it in the morning and it's really allowed me to work pretty much in an unlimited basis where as this summer I was hurting if I did anything. I still wake up every morning with my back hurting but after Yoga it's loosened up pretty good.

I'll be damned if I didn't tweak an oblique muscle doing yoga of all god damned things. All the baseball I have played in my life and never ever did I pull an oblique. But a week ago I bent this way and then pulled that way and *ping*. Not terrible but it got my attention, I felt it and knew it was there but I wouldn't say it hurt until this morning. Monday is my lifting upper body work, and warming up I felt something really weird that basically propogated up my ribcage. Again, not horrible, but now it definitely hurts a little bit. I was able to finish my routine, but I had to cut out a couple of minor exercises. Right now I have ice on it, it's hard to identify exactly where the pain is coming from. I think it's just below the shoulder blade toward my side, but I can't say for 100% sure.

Re: Getting into shape
I might have said this before, but we've cut out all grains and white sugar for my wife's health (and basically any processed foods outside of an emergency) and the weight comes off without effort. We basically eat tons of meat and veggies, cooked in fat and olive oil. Even the blood pressure and all that stuff was down when I had a checkup, despite eating lots of fatty foods.
I'm sure training 2-4x/week helps too. The hardest part is that you just have to make cooking your hobby because you can't really eat any convenience foods.

Re: Getting into shape
signing up for some trail races soon - 25K and marathon, and eyeing benchmarks I'd like to get for, 5K, 10k and maybe the mile.
Got a decent base - but want to be more competitive in the old farts genre. To kick things up a notch, I have to find a way to start routinely working out in the early AM. Probably 100s of times I planned to get up early, and have only succeeded maybe a dozen. So on weekdays, I typically cram whatever workout I get in after 8Pm.
I'm a night owl, the kid is too -which tends to push my free time later. Just hard to turn it around in the AM. And lots of info out on the importance of sleep for recovery.
What's the secret? I'm guessing if I force myself with a blood oath to do the early AM w/ sleep deprivation for two weeks, and survive it - then my evening routine will be forced to change.

Re: Getting into shape
I've turned myself into a morning person for working out, just simply because if it doesn't get done in the morning then it ain't getting done. Mon-Fri I'm on basically the same schedule - up at 6:15 and at the gym at 6:45 for an hour to an hour and a quarter workout depending. Saturday is a long day, start with a 9:00 run with my wife and then I go to the gym to do some core, a yoga class, and then a 30 minute swim. It's about 3 hours on Saturday. Sunday is play day - if I go to the gym (which I usually do) I just shoot hoops or something like that. But again, morning.
One thing I have noticed is that my sleep sucks now that I am in my 50's, but if I get up early I'm tired as hell when I go to bed at night and I actually sleep better. If I'm not exhausted when I go to bed, I won't sleep through the night.
I just don't get marathons. Maybe one - my wife did one and I see that draw - buy why on earth would anyone want to make a habit of those? Everyone I see that runs marathons regularly look like [expletive]. [expletive] all hunched over and skinny and [expletive]. It's not good for you.

Re: Getting into shape
I ran my first marathon and then a 50K last year -both on trail. Over years, I worked my way up to the long distance stuff, though 12 to 20K is probably still my sweet spot for distance.jim wrote:

The marathon was a great experience on a perfect day. Classic Ozark trails are what I seem to handle best. Camped out there the night before.
Not sure if I'll try the 50K this year -the timing for that is tough. It was an incredible experience that I don't regret. But I went out too fast and didn't manage it right and bonked - the last 10 miles were largely a slog
Training wise- I have to cross-train & mix in a variety of running distances and speeds. Am going to focus on a 5K PR this summer. have only done a couple road half-marathons, so I know I can do better and hope to next month, take a couple minutes off my previous time. Will see, the wind in January destroys me.
Am curious how I could hold up and do w/ road marathon, so may attempt one next fall. My gut says I could blow up physically/mentally on a road marathon. You pretty much are working the same muscles throughout the race. movement on trail varies, which helps me. The mental aspect is better-I tell myself I'm just going out in the woods for several hours.
Anything you do too much can be bad for you. Got to get to know yourself, and when to back off. I sense many people jump into longer distance races too soon. Definitely, not for everybody.
