Glad to hear Dexter is getting a shot someplace if he is still interested in playing. Thought after that injury last season he might have been done.

Yeah I'm pretty surprised, that seemed like a natural conclusion to his career.

Blue Jays signed OF Dexter Fowler to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Fowler just finished up a perhaps ill-advised five-year, $82.5 million contract that he signed with the Cardinals back in 2017. The 36-year-old outfielder appeared in only seven major league games last season with the Angels before suffering a torn ACL in his right knee. He's slashed just .219/.320/.367 over his last 1,030 plate appearances since the beginning of 2018. In other words, it's a low-impact move all around.

I’ve been following baseball a very long time. It’s still incredible to me how you can go from a guy worthy of $80 million to completely done so quickly. Just a few percents of performance and you’re practically worthless.

It's called the margin of error at the professional level. That's why very few get to play this game at the highest level.

Dexter's foot has been an issue for a few years now. Throw ACL tear on top of that and you can't hit all the sudden.

Absolutely preposterous how small the margin for error is at that level. What's the line from Bull Durham? An extra hit a week makes a .250 hitter a .300 hitter. One more dying quail a week and you're in Yankee Stadium.

Here it is:

Know what the difference between hitting .250 and .300 is? It's 25 hits. 25 hits in 500 at bats is 50 points, okay? There's 6 months in a season, that's about 25 weeks. That means if you get just one extra flare a week - just one - a gorp... you get a groundball, you get a groundball with eyes... you get a dying quail, just one more dying quail a week... and you're in Yankee Stadium.
-- Crash Davis

Maybe a little overstated, most guys hitting 300 are getting more than 500 ABs. But it's a good point that really illustrates just how small the margins are even using an outdated stat like Batting Average.

Royals exercised their 2023 club option on manager Mike Matheny.

No more lame-duck status for Matheny, who has overseen a 100-122 record in Kansas City since taking the dugout reins in October 2019. He had a 591-474 managerial record in his nearly seven-year run as the Cardinals' skipper from 2012-2018.

Looks like the Rangers cut Matt Carpenter.
