I wonder if Shildt was worried he wouldn't get a job so he jumped on the MLB position and regretted it.

It seems like both of Shildt's jobs are just part time gigs that won't take a lot of time for either.

Right. I guess I was just surprised he jumped on the MLB office job so early. He obviously demonstrated he could manage effectively, I figured he would find a job as a manager somewhere.

Daniel Ponce de Leon signs with the Angels:
The Angels have agreed to a minor league contract with right-hander Daniel Ponce de Leon, per the team’s official transactions log. Because the former Cardinals swingman was released in September and did not return to a big league roster before season’s end, he qualified as a minor league free agent who can sign during the lockout.

Rangers signed INF Matt Carpenter to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic says that Carpenter had at least one major league offer from another club but decided to bet on himself for a shot to play near his home in Fort Worth, Texas. Carpenter also undoubtedly sees a legitimate opportunity for playing time with the Rangers, as the team's third base and designated hitter spots would appear to be relatively open. The 36-year-old will have to reverse a downward spiral, of course, having posted just a .605 OPS over the last two seasons. Carpenter remade his swing over the winter with the help of Joey Votto, among others.

Daniel Ponce de Leon gave up a run in two innings of work in his Cactus League debut on Saturday against the Diamondbacks.

Ponce de Leon, 30, allowed one hit -- a solo homer to David Peralta -- and he walked two. The former Cardinals starter was signed to a minor league contract in January, and will need to pitch well in Cactus League action in order to make the club. This is probably an inauspicious beginning to that battle.

Mark McGwire has been working with Mariners’ top prospect Kelenic all off-season. Taking him under his wing.

Curious how he adjusts.
