There's been an effort in some circles to restore Grant's reputation. Certainly he was better as a military leader than a nickname like "the Butcher" reflects, the blunder at Cold Harbor aside. His memoir, the book that he finished days b/f he croaked so his family would be provided for, is considered a classic.

Any kids book recs? I need some xmas ideas for my 1 yo nephew. I've got him covered with Shel Silverstein, but that's about it.

Maybe everyone knows this, but Silverstein was also a prolific songwriter.

For a one-year-old? Can't go wrong with Dr. Seuss.

This book is restorative -theme is Union wouldn't have survived without him as general or president. His military acumen seems genius mostly, but professional.

At times I wonder whether the Union was worth saving. In the end, I believe it was/is. There was inevitability with that war, and the failure of the U.S, to win it would have had more protracted and terrible consequences Racial strife, factionalism. I'm thinking like a larger-scale longer-version of Yugoslavia. Plus, the intact US existence in the world, and it's role in immigrants fleeing tyranny to the US to involvement in WWI and WWII. Yes, I know it's far from perfect now, and undercurrents of the Civil War strife exist today - but it is pretty amazing that the nation was able to survive and thrive.

It is interesting that a pragmatic-thinker like Grant comes to the same conclusions in his own manner on Slavery and saving the Union, as the high-minded thinker, Lincoln.

I'm reading Team of Rivals now and just getting to the part where Grant takes over - looking forward to it.

Just finished "One Last Strike". I enjoyed it, a good little piece on the inner workings of how & why TLR manages the way he does.
