That's what I've tried to say multiple times today. We can't afford to sign impact FA pitchers. We're going to have to develop them and currently, we don't have any in our system.maddash wrote:If the Cardinals truly are limited in what they can spend, is it wiser to try bringing pitchers up through the system (even at the cost of a high signing bonus), or is it more financially wise to test the market a few years from now when pitchers like Marquis and Suppan have already set a precedent for enormously inflated salaries? Because the Cardinals, through this draft, are setting themselves up for the enormously inflated salaries side of things, and not the cheaper route of bring pitchers up through the system.
The Tigers took Porcello, who obviously know something about drafting young power pitching. Not to mention that Dombrowski drafted Beckett when he worked for the Marlins.
Oh well. Maybe whateverhisnameis will turn into the next Brandon Webb.

That's an interesting question, and I'm interested in hearing some responses.maddash wrote:If the Cardinals truly are limited in what they can spend, is it wiser to try bringing pitchers up through the system (even at the cost of a high signing bonus), or is it more financially wise to test the market a few years from now when pitchers like Marquis and Suppan have already set a precedent for enormously inflated salaries? But with the draft, you're committing $10 million to someone who might not even make the majors! Now granted, he likely will... but Porcello is only a high schooler so he's far from a sure thing.
I just don't like how people act like drafting a player automatically ensures he's going to pan out or something. There is a reason they didn't draft Porcello. I guess they didn't think he was worth the money. I just can't believe he is such a sure-fire lock when so many other teams passed on an opportunity to draft him as well. Some of them couldn't afford it, but there were certainly a handful of capable teams that opted to take someone else.

Money. Guys like him and Porcello want in the 7-10 million neighborhood. Considering the high chance that they may never even pitch in the big leagues, it is a huge risk.mikechamp wrote:Just curious: All this hype about the Matt Harvey guy, and he's still on the board. What's up with that?
But I think worth it if you want to, as maddash mentioned, avoid over priced free agents.

Any idea what the numbers on this are? First round pitchers making the majors? I said Porcello (arguably a top 1-2 pitcher in the draft) would "likely" make the majors at some point. Obviously that is a lot different from saying he'll be successful, though.thrill wrote:Considering the high chance that they may never even pitch in the big leagues, it is a huge risk.
Do you -- or does anyone -- have any idea of what the percentages are?

Try going to the draft caster and doing a sort by name. Crosby hasn't been selected yet.jim wrote:I can't get any results, can someone tell me where a kid named Casey Crosby has gone (if he has gone). LHP.
