Not excusing; just saying the drama started from an over-the-board tournament with Magnus; evidence of cheating shows a pattern but it's still not evidence of vibrating anal beads.

Magnus had anal beads tuned to the same frequency installed before the match! THAT'S why he left after one move. He was feeling it!

My first reaction to this is to think that online games for money or even otherwise are surely going to feature rampant cheating. Googling a bit, it seems like chess.com thinks they can use software maybe comparing your moves to chess engine moves and also looking at how long it takes you to make decisions, to detect cheaters. I have no idea whether this is believable or not, and they are of course hush on how exactly the detection works, but from a know nothing perspective, I feel like it would be basically impossible to stop sophisticated cheaters online.

The Candidates tournament wrapped up yesterday. There are 8 players in it and they play each other twice in a round robin format for 14 rounds. The winner goes on to challenge the World Champion (Ding Liren atm) in the World Chess Championship. So, a lot is on the line.

Fabi and Nepo were both 0.5 point behind the leader (Gukesh, a 17 year old phenom from India) going into yesterday. Gukesh drew his game so was 1 point ahead of both Fabi and Nepo at the conclusion of Nepo and Fabi's game. They knew this. A draw in the game ends the tournament with both of them half a point behind Gukesh.

A win by either and they tie Gukesh and keep the tournament alive where the winner of Fabi/Nepo goes on to play Gukesh in a tie breaker.

Sorry for the long explanation. But, it's important context.

Fabi was winning the game against Nepo. But he couldn't convert it into a win. Nepo's defense held as Fabi couldn't find the move or two he needed to make and after they traded down to an equal position, there's not much to be done. Fabi ended up a pawn up in a queen/pawn endgame that was a theoretical draw. After they get to this point, Fabi whispers 'draw?' to Nepo who shakes his head and agrees. Ending both of their tournament half a point short of Gukesh.

After the game and some back and forth about the positions they were just in, Nepo apologizes to Fabi knowing full well the disappointment Fabi's going through. Fabi just says 'my fault'. Which is obvious but just a heartwarming dialogue between the two as they face heartbreak for falling just short.
