Let's not turn this into a referendum on any one poster.

Bottom line is...GRB should be a welcoming and enjoyable place for everyone to discuss, debate, and talk about baseball things or non-baseball things without it becoming personal when we all as individuals tend to have different opinions. Sometimes we all need an emotional break especially if we feel like we are trying to push against the majority; so if you need that; take it. And hopefully we are all capable of realizing that piling on someone wasn't cool in school and it ain't cool now.

It's frustrating when someone tries to have a discussion in a Politics forum, but you're not allowed to base the discussion on things that you've read in the media, or things that science says, or numbers that governmental agencies present, etc..........because nobody is to be trusted. When that's the foundation of your position, how can you possibly have a rational discussion? He positioned himself so that EVERYTHING could be dismissed based upon that premise. That's a recipe for frustration.

Karp is OG GRB. I still crack up thinking about those photos of him and Tiny Miles when we had that GRB meme going. I think (and hope) he'll come back and post again.

It's a pretty special thing to have been going through time all together here since 2006. I would have never thought back then that 15 years later many of us would still be here shooting the breeze. I try to be respectful in my posts but I know my rhetoric can get pretty bombastic sometimes. At the end of the day I'm just a regular nobody so whatever my take on a given issue is, it is certainly not the most enlightened position out there, even if I express it with great certitude.

I'd say all in all, GRB is doing pretty well for a 15-year-old message board.

I think you could say that last sentence about almost everyone here (except Michael). I'd bet if we all met under circumstances where we didn't know each other from here, we'd get along just fine.

There is truth in what you’re saying, Leroy. I’ve had the privilege of meeting quite a few of you in person over the years and all have been positive encounters with genuinely good people. I hope once we get beyond all this pandemic crap we can do it again.

It pretty much boils down to different sets of values/morals with the political discussions. My example is usually abortion. One side believes it is murdering the innocent. One side believes it is a mother's most important right and shouldn't involve the government. There's not a lot of room for compromise.

One side thinks that Covid is a deadly pandemic worthy of giving away whatever rights the government deems as necessary. The other believes the government is actively trying to kill their citizens, or at least are being purposefully neglectful. There's not a lot of in between that range.

We all sat down to play cards at a table. Some are playing texas hold 'em and getting frustrated because two guys in the group started playing black jack in the middle of a hand. There's no point telling people your cards equal 21 if everyone else is playing hold 'em.

I'm sorry to see karp go, and hope that he finds his way back. As left leaning, and at times unreasonable as I find this forum to be, it is still the most decent place to be on the internet that I've found. It helps that a lot of us have been here since 2006. It's closer to arguing with your crazy 2nd cousin as opposed to the guy standing outside 7/11. There's at least a tiny bit of respect shown and history to sustain the relationships.

There are plenty of people living in some space between. Most people on most issues live in some space between. They are online, but you can't hear them over loud, objectively more entertaining noises from either side. IN the same way the issues with the most concentrated polarity become the only ones we talk about it--they offer the most to gain for jackasses, and they offer individuals the easiest perceived moral high ground. It's a shame that our country let Covid become one of these issues. And by 'shame' I mean [expletive] -ing ridiculous. Scary. There should be a little fringe, sure--but goddam we are an unhealthy society in so many ways, just one of them being a pandemic.

I'm not going to comment on specific people leaving or toxic topics, because not everyone always should leave room in their life for stuff like message boards if it isn't making them happy. I've taken long periods where I don't post or lurk.


The long-term future of this board is kind of set in stone, like all similar message boards. Look around and ask yourself how many women are active posters anymore? How many people under 30, let alone 25? These boards have ceased being the place for social discussions online for pretty much everyone except those that were in during the heyday. We're still going strong compared to so many similar boards and we will continue to for a while, but eventually we're all going to die off/age out/find better ways to engage with our team. It's the community that holds it together, and if you don't fit in with the community, I totally understand it not being worth it anymore.
