Defensively, of course, Rolen is the superior (since he's superior to any other third baseman out there), but Glaus is no slouch; he has an RF of 2.55 and a FPCT of .949 to Rolen's 2.84 RF and .966 FPCT.

Glaus is in fact a slouch, and his teams have been looking for ways to move him to 1B for years now. -5 UZR last year to Rolen's +24. -8 vs. +19 per 150 games between 2000 and 2007.

FWIW PMR and RZR are friendlier to Glaus.

I like Glaus hitting behind Pujols much better than Rolen hitting there. The rest of the lineup is not half bad with strength added in the middle. I would still like a trade bringing Jason Bay, Jack Wilson and Matt Morris to the Cards, however.

Another way to outscore an opponent is to prevent them from scoring runs. The bats are similar and the gloves are about as dissimilar as you can get among mlb third basemen.

The only thing I like about the deal is that I believe Scott's injury to be far more debilitating and last year's performance will become the norm for him going forward. Then again, I have neither seen the results of his surgery nor am I any kind of a doctor so I have about as second hand and least qualified of an opinion as you can get.

I'm not saying it's as bad a deal as cpebbles, I'm just saying it isn't a clear win either.

Glaus' foot affects a hitter a lot less then what Rolen's shoulder does, and Rolen (imo) isn't ever going to be the same hitter he was..

I put in the category of "not great, not ideal, but relatively harmless given the circumstances." If it is a punt, that doesn't bother me too much either. Though I think we're better offensively with or without Glaus than some others here seem to think.
