First episode back sucked. Took all the slapstick elements of previous seasons with really clumsy attempts at emotional stakes with no wit or subtlety.
It was OK. I liked the Muppet Babies schtick. And Fred Willard should replace Chevy, but I'm sure they just wrote out Pierce all together.
I don't watch the show, but in an interview w/ Joel McHale, he said Chevy will still be on the show this season as he had quit after the taping had finished.
I think he'd shot most of the episodes, but had to be written out before the finale.
He's in the finale as well, at least going off what McHale said in the interview (only because the finale was taped before some of the other episodes).

If you're sufficiently nerdy, as I am, then there are other reasons too, but she is a big draw.

Way late to the game here, but I just discovered the awesomeness that is Boardwalk Empire. Plowed through the first two seasons in the past couple weeks. I'm not sure where it fits in my personal "best TV shows ever" hierarchy but it's in the top 10 for sure. So many good characters and interesting storylines. Really only the cop Van Alden seems forced or unrealistic. It's amazing to see Steve Buscemi completely own such an atypical role for him.

I think Van Alden may be the best character on that show. Well, second best.

I love the out of town dudes too. Luciano, Lansky, Buggsy Siegel, Capone and Rothstein are my favorite characters. So much so that I'd rather the show was about them.

I liked Sleater too until

he inexplicably decided he liked the the bosses wife more than his way hotter, less crazy girlfriend.

All those stories are awesome. There's some huge and complicated plots in that show, but they work beautifully. It's really great all around.
I know you just finished season 2, which ended rather epically. Just wait till season 3. Intense.

yeah, that seemed a bit contrived to have Sleater throw over smoking hot, totally into him, not with two children, not married to homicidal boss Katy

I don't know if anyone is still watching, but I believe last night was the night PBS aired the Downton Abbey jumps the shark episode.
