After throwing four one-hitters in his 12-year major-league career, Cardinals pitcher Lon Warneke could be forgiven for thinking that perhaps the elusive no-hitter simply wasn’t meant to be.

September / October 2011 - the craziest finish to a season I ever witnessed. Wonder if it ranks as the craziest in history? The last day of the regular season - I haven't seen anything like it before or since.
Then of course the run the Cardinals took from 10 games back of the wild card on August 27th to World Series Champions. The GDTs in late August / early September were ghost towns. Sometimes only two or three people. Then the slooooooowwww gain of interest as people began to believe again. What a ride!

For the first time since the Whitey Herzog days of the 1980s, the Cardinals were in the thick of the pennant race. So it was fitting that
on September 2, 1996, two stars of the '80s -- Ozzie Smith and Willie McGee -- led the Cardinals to an extra-inning victory over the Astros:

The last Cardinals no-hitter came 21 years ago today, when Bud Smith no-hit the Padres in a 4-0 win. See why Dave Duncan didn't think Smith could finish it off:

48 years ago today, Lou Brock broke Maury Wills' single-season stolen base record. See how injuries to both his hands may have actually helped him do it:
