It's actually due to past mismanagement that it took so long for Mexico to get to this level- don't they have a track record of choosing the wrong players?

Not the wrong players, but bad organization, no discipline, poor preparation and no leadership? Absolutely. Also, these are the players who won an under 17 world cup 6 years ago. Freddie Adu, though. Wow. (I only saw the first half). I bet he played himself right out of the Turkish second division.
In other news, the Timbers look like an expansion team. In the last three weeks they lost a game they should have tied. Tied a game they should have won. (And looked good in both games but for lapses). Then tonight they looked like expletive and got hammered. We really need a quality defender--a veteran would be best.

FYI, River drew 1-1 so they're relegated to 2nd division. Fans went mental, started tearing up the stadium. Police turned fire hoses on them to keep them off the field. Outside the stadium there's rioting, cars on fire, 24 injuries reported so far with 4 police seriously injured and the for their own safety the Belgrano fans still haven't been let out of the stadium over 2 hours after the match ended.

The area outside the stadium, located in the leafy northern suburb of Nunez, looked like a war zone with police battling hand to hand with River Plate hooligans, who are known by the colorful nickname "Los Borrachos del Tablon" -- the Drunks in the Stands.
