I agree with you completely. Obama needs to focus on the positions, and not the individuals. The Democrats just aren't good at the mud-slinging game.ghostrunner wrote:First, where's McCain's balanced budget? Second, who was the first President in 30 years to even submit a balanced budget? Clinton, a Democrat. Before that? LBJ. Bush inherited a surplus and had one balanced budget. Since then it's been deficits all the way.planet pujolsian wrote:How exactly does Obama defend against the ad I just saw, "No balanced budget", "Ready to tax hard working American families"? It's completely false.
Then for the tax thing, do a little Ross Perot and throw the chart up that Popeye has posted. It's an easy one to understand. The average American will love Obama's tax plan. They're not going to care that he hikes taxes on rich people. The Democrats just have to make sure those people get out and vote.
He needs to hammer home the point that his tax plan calls for cuts for 95% of American taxpayers. He needs to keep discussing details of his energy plan. He needs to stress level-headed compromise on social issues. Don't focus on Iraq, focus on Afghanistan. Stress "fairness" for all Americans, all while staying above the muck. I think if he does this, he can win the moderates.
Not surprisingly, he did most of this in his convention speech, but he needs to hammer home these points in the debates. It won't surprise me if McCain spreads the red cape and hopes Obama rushes for it. Like I said, he needs to paint himself as the candidate of what's fair, while making McCain look like he's the candidate for the elite.

I think the article has her saying students should "debate both sides," which is different. She's saying it doesn't have to be part of the curriculum.haltz wrote:Newsweek is fisking chain emails? lol
FWIW, "teaching both sides" is just as bad (or offensive, to me anyway) and because she registered republican doesn't mean she wasn't an AIP member. Her husband was and more than one person involved in the party in Alaska has said she was as well. Snopes has the book list thing covered already, and the initial conversation that it stemmed from is weird at best.

There's already a class for debating ideals and issues...it's called philosophy.ghostrunner wrote:I think the article has her saying students should "debate both sides," which is different. She's saying it doesn't have to be part of the curriculum.haltz wrote:Newsweek is fisking chain emails? lol

Of course she amended that once someone told her she can't say those things. I don't really care about what the stupid email alleges, but it does concern me that this would actually come out of her mouth.

Unfortunately a lot of voters pay more attention to half truths and dirty politics than actual issues. People that already have a firm stance on key issues already know who they are going to vote for. The rest are prone to snap judgements. I would have bet a lot of money that Bush couldn't get re-elected based on his job performance and public perception/approval ratings, but he did. The Democrats need to give just as much as they are going to get (although not necessarily directly from Obama) or they will lose yet another election when conditions are extremely favorable for them to win.Popeye_Card wrote: I agree with you completely.
