Somebody just came around our offices to count the number of people in the building and to inquire as to whether we could work from home and if not, is there something that can be done to enable working from home. He started on the second floor and our area was the last to be checked on the floor. So far there are 65 of us in the office and I doubt there are too many more on the first floor. We do have some production labs down there who can't work from home for obvious reasons but I'd bet there are well under 200 of us in the building where over 700 normally are.
He also said that the company can solve the issues keeping most of the people from being able to work at home and is working to do that where possible such as temporarily providing hotspots for those who don't have Internet. It looks like we'll be forced to work from home by the end of the week.
My biggest issue with working from home is that I am much more productive in the office where I have multiple monitors, full sized keyboard, etc. compared to working from just the laptop. Plus, when I'm at home, I'm at home. I don't think about work. I have tried working from home before and I just can't get in the right mindset compared to being in the office. When I'm in the office, it's time to work. At home, it's time to relax and not think about work.
It seems like the company is going to tell us to just take the stuff home from our desk if that is what we feel we need to stay out of the office so I guess I'll be packing up a couple of monitors, docking station and everything in the next day or so and be stuck at home for days on end once they shut down restaurants and bars. I'm not sure how I'll handle that.
