They can. But voters and the media can also put pressure on her to answer some questions. I think it's a pretty reasonable request given that she could be a heartbeat away from the presidency. Especially when it's someone who we know almost nothing about. McCain and Obama have probably done 100 interviews between them since this whole campaign began. Biden was a presidential candidate himself, so we've heard from him as well.

Hudler, not even the McCain statement said anything about her son going to Iraq as being the reason why she won't be available for interviews.

I for one would like to know what she means when she keep saying that she said "thanks but no thanks" to Congress. That looks like a blatant bald-faced lie to me, so I'd be curious how she answers this question. I'd also like her to explain her position on earmarks, since she has lobbied for them extensively (and received them) in the past but is now painting herself as a maverick opponent to them. I'd also like her to clarify her position on things like abortion, abstinence only sex education, censorship, gay rights, stem cell research, teaching creationism in schools, and more generally the role of religion in setting government policy. I imagine some statements on the troopergate investigation would also be useful, though I'd understand if she wouldn't be able to talk about that while the investigation is ongoing (though I guess I'd like to know what she has to say about accusations that she's stonewalling the investigation).

I don't think these are unfair things to want to know, and she obviously isn't going to just voluntarily address a lot of these things while just reading speeches to big crowds of supporters. If the McCain camp deems an interview too dangerous because she'd be put on the spot to answer questions like these, then I think taking the McCain/Palin ticket to task for that is perfectly reasonable.

Interesting that the Democrats used McCain's name three times as much as the Republicans used Obama's name in their respective conventions. Democrats also used "September 11" twice as much as Republicans.

Maybe some people are only hearing what they want to hear?
One word comparison not listed should probably be "my opponent". I would bet McCain said that much more than the actual name of Obama. I would also bet that the many times that Obama said McCain he also said Bush to tie them together. I would think that McCain didn't want to say Obama so as not to remind the undecided voters of his celebrity status, instead making Palin the celebrity.

As far as 9/11, if you counted the amount of time spent on it you'd have to include the nearly 3 minute video the RNC used to remind people of their fears. They didn't say the date very often, but they replayed the images. To which Olbermann acted all choked up and emotional about.

You've said it all better than I would have. My thoughts are more directly wanting to know how she's tough, smart and articulate as the talking points were constantly stated before her speech, but the campaign is afraid to put her in front of the media? She's a pit bull with lipstick, but she can't handle the press? The afternoon before her speech, as the media were talking to pundits the issue of sexism by the media kept being mentioned. Finally a couple of reporters, Andrea Mitchell and Ann Curry, each asked the interviewee (the gov of HI and some other female Representative, respectively), "In what way or how has the media been sexist? What has been said?" They couldn't answer that because it because there wasn't anything. They then only spoke to generalities of the questions about her experience.

Most of us here seem to see through most of the politics, knowing that they're trying to get us to watch the right hand while the left pulls the rabbit out of the trap door in the hat (spoiler alert). What's scary is the number of people who aren't as skeptical, cynical, well-read, educated or open-minded enough to seeing both sides - however you want to characterize people who only believe whatever their party or news source tells them. That's frightening.

I thought it was country first. :)
great post Richie. I've had a hard time understanding the "country first" stuff. sounds like a motto for the USSR or the other extreme -a facist state.

This irks the hell out of me. More fear politics by the Republican party. They clearly WANT Americans to live in fear. You know who else wants that? The terrorists that our troops are working their tail off to hunt down and destroy.

I'm pretty sure you can protect the country without trying to scare the citizens into voting your way every chance you get.

I haven't seen the video, so I'll ask how it's a scare tactic instead of a "never forget" montage.

I'll go ahead and openly wonder how remembering 9/11 is used primarily as a scare tactic as well.

All about national security, right?

Please. That video was a disgusting, horrible tactic. Nothing more, nothing less.

"Kill us they did."
"Bodies falling."
Etc.

Give me a break. I'm so sick of this "I DONT SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM IS" motto used by conservatives. Turn a blind eye to evil as long as it's on your side.
