I am trying to train myself that the timing of the runs shouldn't matter. Psychologically, last night really hurt because we were one pitch away from winning, but if the Brewers scored their runs earlier in the game (and got off to a 5-0 lead), the feeling about the outcome changes since we would have expected to lose a game in which we were down by 5.

that's weird to make up a scenario that didn't happen.

i was pretty bummed when he gave up the yelich homerun but was like, "well, we'll go to extras and see what happens" and then 2 seconds later the game is over. i was mostly enjoying the game up until that.

I was trying to put into context the statement "we lost a game we should have won."

Cause psychologically, we all (myself included) probably felt that way. But in reality, we shouldn't have won. The Brewers scored more runs in 9 innings than we did. And we didn't have any self-inflicted mistakes or bad calls that caused us to lose.

It's just the timing of the Brewers runs that caused the pain.

The Manager thought it was a good idea. Seriously, he did.
One pitch away from being a genius.

Now he looks like an idiot.

Just gotta give the brewers credit. They earned this win.
After the first home run I don't think leaving him in was genius.
I was shocked he didn't pull him. Especially considering Braun now has 3 HR in 4AB off Leone. Not sure if anyone was up though.

Rough night for you guys. You always seem to get the better of us in the end though.

No one was up. Leone was mowing through each batter. At that point the game is his. And I really don't care about a fluky 4 at bat sample.

yeah, but what if the brewers got up 5-0, then lyons comes in and does 4 shut out innings, the bats score 8 off the brewers bullpen (because they should have stopped us) and bowman gets the save. bam. it's a whole new game!

Yeah, I see now that no one was up. My only thought would be that he knows Braun absolutely owns him, he's hitting 4th in the inning, so he's the winning run if he gets up..........should I have someone up? I don't know.

It would be helpful if a starting pitcher could go more than 5 innings. This isn't the playoffs. We shouldn't be asking the pen to go 4 innings every damn night. (I'm not saying Flaherty is to blame, for the record). Leone [expletive] up and went back to the same location on Braun, who sitting on the pitch. I put that on Leone/Molina as much as I do Matheny even though Leone shouldn't have still been in there. Anyway, shuffle the personnel of the bullpen all you want but if we really do just get 5 innings out of a SP every night this is going to be a recurring problem.

Why carry 19 relievers if you're going to stick with bad matchups anyway?

That's kind of what I thought. Wasn't paying close enough attention, but surely someone had to have been available and a better option than Leone at the end.

And what made Matheny decide that Leone was THE guy to run out there for that kind of outing? Spring training performance?
Leone was one pitch away from making Matheny look like a genius. In the 5 batters he faced prior to Yelich, Leone struck out 2, gave up 2 lazy fly balls, and a seeing eye single.

Leone left a couple pitches up and 2 outstanding players made him pay.

Sometimes you just get beat.

But pinning anything on Matheny for the Leone 5 out decision is ridiculous.
There aren't very many relievers in the game that I would leave in for a 5 out save period, and especially not a non-closer. I thought using Leone in the 8th was a fine move, but I would have gone to another arm in the ninth. You don't need to be a genius in this game. Just play the numbers. And numbers suggest that 5 out saves from non-closers is a bad idea.
