This is basically a money grab.
Elaborate? (I'm not being snarky, just want more of your thoughts.)
There's a lot of barrels of crude in that wilderness. Sure, someone will get to drill it and make a big load of cash, but why does it matter? Or, are you against drilling there/and or drilling anywhere for whatever reasons (environmental?, limited market impact?, etc.)

I've got no problem if you want to vote for McCain.Diddy wrote:no ive just liked alot of the talking points that ive heard over the past few days. They are more inline with my way of thinking. Ive liked mccain. I was a mike huckabee supporter and the last few days are the first time that ive wanted to vote for mccain instead of just voting for the lesser of two evils.Socnorb11 wrote: So basically, it was the "Drill baby drill" chants that won you over?
My question was about what you heard Wednesday night that made you want to vote for McCain. In my view, we didn't hear anything new about McCain on Wednesday night. I think everyone agrees that it was almost entirely a mud-slinging festival by Guiliani and Palin, and not much else. That's why I'm wondering what you saw that I didn't.

Strat, correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the Democratic attacks on McCain regarding his general aloofness on things like the economy, his houses, his sameness with George W. Bush? I don't remember Joe Biden putting Cindy McCain down. I don't recall Hillary Clinton basically making a mockery and laughing hysterically at a certain aspect of McCain's life that helped make him who he is like they did to Barack Obama's community organizing.
And McCain has not distanced himself, unless I missed a press release where he denounced all the really [expletive] and uncalled for things said by Romney and Palin.

Yeah, I don't know how much real ammunition they got out of it either. I think the Republicans are baiting the Dems a bit to try to compare Obama and Palin, then turn the switcheroo and say, "but she's only going to be the VP!" Hopefully the Obama campaign doesn't fall for that trap.Fat Strat wrote:Ammunition against Guiliani? Against Romney? It will be hard for the DNC to turn around their statements and use them against McCain, who seperated himself from that talk in his speech. And if they do that, the Republicans can and will just as easily turn Biden's, Reid's, Hilary's, and other's words spoken over the past year against Obama.Socnorb11 wrote:I agree..... that was by far the most juvenile display of politics that I've seen at any of the conventions.Radbird wrote:The memory I'll take away from the RNC is of Rudy snickering at himself over how witty his snarky comments were.
And of how lucky we are that he, as the early front runner, flamed out early. I'm not nearly as concerned about a McCain administration as I would've been about a Guiliani one.
In hindsight, I think the Obama campaign came out of the RNC with lots of ammunition for the upcoming two months.
It's not like the democrats have been sweet and cuddly with the republicans for the last 8 years. There's plenty of mud to sling on both sides of the aisle.
Personally, I think if Obama stays on the high road as much as possible, and just focuses on issues, he'll be fine. If they come after him about taxes, he needs to turn around and say, "Well that's how I'm paying for my plan--how are you paying for yours?" If they talk about big government, he can discuss how much government has grown during the previous administration, which McCain largely supported. If talks turn to social issues, I think that favors Obama, because more independants lean socially liberal than socially conservative. I think both parties will have their base voters (the extremists on social issues) already out voting in full force.
And by all means, the Obama campaign needs to completely distance themselves from any Palin talk. The media will do whatever dirt-digging they need to. The troopergate thing will play out over the next month.
Anyway, my lasting impression of the RNC was also Guiliani's speech. Basically cementing what I perceive as arrogance by the Republican party in general. All in all, I think it rallied the base, but I'm not sure how many swing voters it captured. Though they are doing a pretty good job in painting Obama as inexperienced. They're obviously correct in pointing out that he has less than McCain. But I don't think that alone makes McCain a better leader for this country, even taking out my differences in political stances.

I think if you wouldn't have watched either convention, you wouldn't be this hot and bothered.

In theory, it could be said that McCain's "experience" will hurt him, since he's now riding the "Change Washington" bandwagon. He's had 18 years to help change Washington, and hasn't done much (anything) to change anything.

This is all coming down to the political map. To me, there are 4 states that are battling it out as far key voting states (NV, MT, VA and OH), the rest have likely been decided and others are locks at this stage.

id like to see how they came up with those price differences. I think the fact that wed have our own source if needed would keep price gouging down.TimeForGuinness wrote:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic_Ref ... l_reserves
ANWR is basically a money grab...and won't lead to any "energy independence"
