Some guy on YouTube, Eric topol, has some interesting points about the delta variant. Luckily he also wrote an oped in the guardian so we can trust him.

Tldr/w

1. We lack data to evaluate the vaccine efficacy against delta.
2. Efficacy is not as high as people (I’m going to add “that took the vaccine”) think it is. Lord knows lotta people around here don’t think it’s effective.
3. Protective measures like masking/distancing/etc need to be in place. See point 2.
4. Rapid at home testing, a thing we talked about like a ducking year ago, should be available for free. Germany has them, and delta, and have avoided a 4th wave. I’m going to break my arm patting myself on the back too hard on this one.
5. Vaccines don’t provide sterilizing immunity. And weren’t designed to.
6. Need a nasal vaccine to get that. Nasal vaccine would protect the airway (and in his opinion be more widely accepted) and would quash even delta because that’s where the virus comes in.
7. Breakthroughs are getting virus in the airway and then (vast majority of the time) the t and B cells even in people without antibodies are kicking in. T and B cells are the adaptive arm of the immune system or the guard dog that is back to sleeping in the bed if you’ve been following along.
8. Changed mind on boosters in America with delta. Global inequality paired with the adaptive immunity of those that had the vaccine seemed good enough. Real world data in Israel is showing it might be necessary for portions of the population (or all). Also, his words...don’t want to trust Pfizer and modernas word.
9. Rate of hospitalizations (best way to track cases due to lack of testing) increase is unmatched.
10. Unbelievable.
11. Were vulnerable.
12. Very contagious.

Y’all should just watch it. It’s like a 15 minute video of a well respected apolitical Dr that’s written a thousand plus peer reviewerd articles. And, my personal favorite, he echoes everything we’ve talked about in here. Makes me feel good. Well mostly scared as [expletive].

But also good we’re at least sharing some good info in here.

Arkansas is out of icu beds. Mrs AWs hospital is accepting overload from regional hospitals that are out of room. Ie, providing healthcare to the general public and not just veterans. They had to open another wing.

Hospitals in Arkansas are paying signing bonuses of $25k to nurses. On top of $1k shifts. Like I said a month ago. They don’t have the personnel this go around.

mrs aw is back to full time covid again. I can share an updated screen shot of an email with cases of vaxxed/unvaxxed at some point though not much (except volume) has changed from the last one. Lord knows there are skeptics if we don’t document these things.

Arkansas doh added a star to their website today. 85% of active cases (which they keep up to date) are unvaxxed. State is roughly 62% unvaxxed.

The effective r or RT or infection rate is well above 1 still. Though we did have a drop in cases today week over week, every other day this week has been a week over week increase.

I'm really sorry Mrs AW has to bare the brunt of this. I hope she (and you) are holding up OK. This is all so frustrating. UGH

Man, I hear you. The pandemic has turned me into a much more frequent drinker too. I don't drink a LOT every night, but I have at least a couple bourbons almost every night.

I got a negative test on a NAAT walgreen's rapid test this morning, so that's pretty good. Kids getting tested this pm.
