On July 11, 1950, Red Schoendienst told his National League teammates he planned to hit a home run into the upper deck. Then, in the 14th inning, he homered to win the All-Star Game. Read how it happened in the story below:

I'm rooting for Pujols, but there's something really depressing about at-bats like last night where he gets a pitch out over the plate and he drives it, and you see him watch it fly and he looks so certain that he got it all, and you're certain it's a home run like you've seen him do a few hundred times before, and then it lands in the outfielder's glove in front of the warning track.

If you read one story about Cardinals history this year, this should be the one. On July 11, 1911, the Cardinals proved their heroism, saving several of their fellow passengers after their train crashed and caught fire. The accident killed 14 passengers and injured 47 more:

The 1996 Cardinals weren't especially known for their power. But on July 12, they tied a 56-year-old franchise record with seven home runs against the Cubs at Wrigley Field:

Fun fact: the 142 HR they had that year was one shy of the franchise record.

On this date in 1974, Bob Forsch threw a complete-game shutout against the Braves for the first win of his career:

On this date in 1940, Cardinals first baseman Johnny Mize hit a walk-off triple (scoring on an error) to simultaneously beat the New York Giants and complete the cycle:

Somewhere I still have an old style Cardinal hat like Forsch is wearing. They were the rage in 1976.

Tomorrow will mark 95 years since Hall of Famer "Sunny" Jim Bottomley became the second player in Cardinals history to hit for the cycle:
