Re: Michael Sam - NFL's first openly gay prospect
I never understood the love for Tony Dungy in the first place. He was overrated as a coach - Tampa Bay wins the Superbowl the year after he's fired. Yes, he did win one with the Colts, but I think those teams underachieved for the most part. (I wonder if Marvin Harrison being investigated for shooting people was a distraction?)
He's bad as an analyst - he said he'd take Tim Tebow with the #1 overall pick. He's boring and adds nothing to the broadcast. NBC could fire him and most football fans would probably welcome it.

They want to sell storylines in the NFL - and Dungy has/had big connection to main thread in the NFL's recent past - All things Manning - Manning's comeback, Manning V Brady, Manning v the Colts. Manning v Manning etc etc.stlouie_lipp wrote:I never understood the love for Tony Dungy in the first place.
those storylines have largely played out - time to move him along.

His Superbowl was against the Bears so it pretty much doesn't count. You can't beat a team with Rex Grossman starting and then get a trophy for it.stlouie_lipp wrote:I never understood the love for Tony Dungy in the first place. trill wrote:Ftr, I've changed my mind after listening to Dungy on Dan Patrick. I'd fire him, but that's because I don't think he's a good enough football analyst to deal with the headaches his using his platform to spread his religious beliefs cause. Ex-coaches who don't say anything substantive about the game are a dime a dozen. I don't necessarily think it's an issue if NBC doesn't agree with that, at this point. He was a victim of selective reporting. He should have been smart enough to say he'd have drafted him if he was good enough, but instead he stepped into an obvious trap and then was confused when it was sprung.Socnorb11 wrote:NBC should fire Dungy??? For what??
Here's the full interview:
It absolutely is ethically motivated. Go to 4:58 of that interview.Socnorb11 wrote:Schlich wrote:omg quit it with the false equivalencies. Besides the logical fallacies, they're not even good analogies to begin with.
Only because you're convicted to believe that Dungy's intentions were ethically motivated, even though there's no evidence of that.
You're just as stubbornly ignoring Dungy's track record of moral pontification as Schlich and others are assuming it's a factor.
Dungy thinks he's entitled to spread his divisive beliefs and project his morality onto other, law abiding people without repercussion but Sam shouldn't be able to do the same. He thinks Sam should have to settle for unequal treatment and protection under the law and be happy about it. That's hypocrisy. That's inexcusable. If he truly believes he's entitled to that double standard, he's delusional. If he doesn't recognize the double standard, he's stupid. Either way, I don't want to hear from him again. To be fair, I didn't want to before.
None of your last paragraphs is remotely evident in the interview. In fact, he says pretty much just the opposite of everything that you posted. Where does he say that Sam doesn't have a right to spread his beliefs? Where is the double standard that you speak of? Seriously.
Again, 31 other GM's passed on Sam's for 6 rounds............. that's unprecedented for a player of his caliber. You think all of them didn't want him because they're Christians........... or does that just apply to Dungy?
Edit: You're completely misunderstanding his statement at 4:58. He was asked if his faith will bleed into the controversy, and he says it always does. What I interpret from that is that people are going to bring up Dungy's faith.......... which is exactly what has happened in this thread.

To challenge your beliefs on something, you have to take them to their logical conclusion. Being against gay marriage is being against social equality. My comments had nothing to do with the interview. It has everything to do with Dungy's beliefs that he is entitled to the benefits and protection that marriage under the law provides but would deprive other people of based on something that is legal and not a "lifestyle choice."
Depriving another of their legal civil equality because of your own moral code is bigotry.

Wait, you're pointing me to specific snippets of the interview, but saying that your comments had nothing to do with the interview?trill wrote:To challenge your beliefs on something, you have to take them to their logical conclusion. Gay marriage and the politics involved with that is worthy of its own thread, and I think we've covered that pretty thoroughly at GRB.

Re: Michael Sam - NFL's first openly gay prospect
Dungy himself openly volunteered without even being asked that he doesn't agree with Sam's lifestyle. You can't honestly believe him when he pretends to be open and welcoming to other viewpoints and pretends to support Sam's career.Socnorb11 wrote: Again, 31 other GM's passed on Sam's for 6 rounds............. that's unprecedented for a player of his caliber. And please, please, please stop drawing conclusions about what happened in the draft based on your perception of an award he won. College awards are given out for statistical achievements in college. They are not indicators of or intended to be predictors for pro potential, otherwise your boy Tim Tebows would be halfway to the hall of fame by now. Want a more relevant example? We have to go all the way back to....this year. Jackson Jeffcoat: number one overall recruit coming out of HS, son of an NFL player, played at Texas, 2010 Freshman All American, 2013 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, 2013 First Team All American, 2013 Hendricks Award winner for best defensive end in all of college football. Did not get drafted. How could a player of that caliber not get drafted? I'm assuming he's a pedophile.
