Though the Cardinal (bird) is the etymological origin of the color cardinal, the team name (Cardinals) comes from the color of their jerseys when the team was still called the Perfectos.

It just means they were named after the players themselves in some way. The clothing ones are pretty self-explanatory. Cubs were nicknamed that by writers at a time when they had a lot of young players.
