“Rob [Burnett] knows a lot about the process [of how to upgrade the shows], but it all just comes down to money and desire,” said Lebowitz. “One of the issues that we knew was that Next Generation’s remaster was kind of on the cusp of the end of physical media.”

“People had already bought [TNG], so we’d already heard the story that [Paramount] didn’t make a lot of money back on the Next Gen remaster,” said Lebowitz. “So now, the economic model is streaming and how many subscribers you get.”

“So the idea that they won’t remaster Voyager and DS9 because the Blu-rays didn’t sell well — that’s no longer really in the equation,” said Lebowitz.

“The rough calculations that I did said that for the cost of maybe 5 or 6 episodes — episodes — of Discovery or Picard, you could remaster all 14 seasons of DS9 and Voyager,” said Lebowitz.

Producer Alex Kurtzman has revealed he’s overseeing two more original shows set in the Star Trek universe for Paramount+: one focused on Starfleet Academy and a second based on Section 31. During an interview for The New York Times, Kurtzman spoke about the recent success of the newest Star Trek series and the future projects that will lead Star Trek to unexplored corners of the universe.

Starfleet Academy will be aimed at a younger public, although Kurtzman doesn’t reveal if this will be an animated project or a live-action one. As for Section 31, the show will reportedly star Michelle Yeoh as Captain Philippa Georgiou, the character she played on Star Trek: Discovery. In Star Trek lore, Section 31 is a rogue organization born as part of Starfleet Intelligence, before parting ways with the United Federation of Planets. Showing up first on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Section 31 was created to explore the darker aspects of the path to creating the future utopia featured in the Star Trek universe.

Nope. I just like Star Trek.

So I finished Voyager a couple days ago. Really came to love Voyager. I think I gotta say Janeway is the best captain out of the major reboot captains. I'd take her over Picard or Sisko.

Compared to DS9 it felt more like a mission-focused show. More episodes about getting out of a jam than building backstory between characters like DS9 does a lot of, but that was cool too. I liked it.

She managed to get Voyager home from the Delta quadrant over 24 years, defeating the Borg at every turn and fending off far more technologically advanced foes than I'd say Picard or Sisko ever had to. To top it off, she found a way to go back in time and save the crew she lost along the way AND blow up the Borg's trans warp hub they were using to shortcut around the galaxy. She killed the Borg queen for chrissakes. Gangsta.

The finale had a weird soap opera tone I'm not sure was necessary. Why did 7 of 9 need a love interest? Why hook her up with Chakotay at the last minute? That felt kind of contrived and not even necessary for a satisfying resolution to the show. It did provide some comedy though and I guess a way to explain why Janeway was so driven to go back in time and save them, and hence wrap up the plot expeditiously. Did this show get cancelled so they had to write an ending on the quick? We didn't get to see the Voyager crew earn their way back to the Alpha quadrant. It was a basic deus ex machina ending.

Some really great episodes over the seasons.

Picard is still my favorite captain but I had somewhat the same experience watching Voyager. Janeway was an excellent character but The Doctor makes the series complete for me. The pilot episode I thought was well done; but then the show lags a bit for a couple of seasons; then hits it stride. There is some really good Trek; and some really hokey Trek throughout.

RE part of your spoiler I am pretty sure they knew all along that season 7 was it. TNG and DS9 both stopped at 7. But yes it seemed like they had a few filler episodes and then BAM this is how it ends.

Voyager is very pure Trek. A couple of stand out performers. Good mix of light and dramatic entertainment. Good mix of silly and serious. The show is always best when it's about friends in space using science and guile to get out of jams.


The romance angle at the end was truly baffling and funny to me. Chokotay is a mensch, but come on. Totally unearned and borderline creepy with the power dynamics of that relationship. If Chokotay was going to end up with anyone, it obviously should've been Janeway. No one could ever accuse Rick Berman of having a healthy and mature relationship to sexual-social dynamics, and it definitely shows in the writing.

Now GK needs to watch Enterprise. It, too, is pleasantly good.

If you're like me...you will struggle with some of the early episodes of Enterprise. But stick with it.

Edit to say that does not include the Enterprise Pilot; which I thought was very good.
