I just saw there’s a Delta plus variant. No idea what it is yet.

This opinion piece by a professor at Tulane who studies pandemics looks at the role of variants in past influenza pandemics and what that might tell us about the role variants will play re Covid and what it means for vaccines. I thought it was pretty good.

What history tells us about the delta variant — and the variants that will follow
Bumping this article on variants and what we can likely expect based on past flu pandemics.

Good thread.
I know an 11 year old who just had a fairly bad case of Covid. Caught it on a family trip to Mexico. Her parents and older siblings are vaccinated but they were likely around lots of other adults and teens who are not. They live in Mexico in the middle of nowhere. Doubt many people have had access to vaccines there.

Most of the rest of the family, including vaxxed parents and a 20 year old who was vaxxed got breakthrough infections. A vaccinated 12 year old among them did not get it.

My wife's boss got a breakthrough infection on a trip to Vegas last week. She said she could "feel the vaccine working," which I think means that she thinks it would have been worse if she weren't vaccinated.

I think a lot of us, including myself, need to not take discussions like this as personally as we do. A couple of years ago, I had had it with constant bickering, and most of it I brought it on myself. I needed a break, so I took one.

Then I think back to the reason we came here. Mostly because it wasn't Cards Talk. As discussions started to veer more like Cards Talk than the original way things were here, it got harder.

You all should know my positions on most stuff, and that they are way different than most here. But I think it has gotten better as far as letting me express those different opinions, or maybe I just don't care if you agree or not, who knows. You may call me a fool, and you could be right. But there are a lot of fools in this world. I'm just one.

What I keep telling myself, is that someone thinks differently, I think they are wrong. But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe we are all f'ing wrong. Whatever.

From the Newsweek piece I posted yesterday.
Delta, like most of the other variants, blindsided us, worsening and extending the pandemic. When the damage from Delta starts to subside, what other variants will be lurking just behind it to pull us back down again? The World Health Organization is already keeping an eye on several: Eta, which is now in several countries; Kappa, which arose in India; Iota, which first popped up in New York City—and especially Lambda, which has torn through Peru and shows signs of having unusual success in infecting fully vaccinated people, according to one early study. It has already spread to Argentina, Chile, Ecuador as well as Texas and South Carolina.
