Cubs counter the Cardinals' minor league deal of a former Cardinal with a minor league deal of a former Cardinal of their own. Tit for tat!

Shelby Miller won his arbitration case against the Diamondbacks and will receive a $4.9 million salary in 2018.
Arizona countered at $4.7 million when arbitration figures were exchanged last month. Miller made just four starts for the Diamondbacks in 2017 before having to undergo Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery in May. He probably won't return to a major league mound until sometime after the 2018 All-Star break. The 27-year-old is scheduled to become a free agent next winter.

Braves signed RHP Miguel Socolovich to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Socolovich allowed 20 runs -- 18 earned -- in 18 2/3 innings last season with the Cardinals before getting designated for assignment in late May. The 31-year-old right-hander is highly doubtful to crack the Opening Day bullpen in Atlanta.

I'll never fully understand how certain people win their arbitration case and others don't in MLB.

lol, they went all the way to arbitration for $200K? I know that's a lot to us, but to them? Couldn't they have just met in the middle at $4.8 mil??

it is crazy how 200k, to me, is a life changer. to them, a sneeze.

I just can't believe a guy who is going to miss at least half the season wins an arbitration case to begin with, especially when the money is that close. How do they win the argument that he is going to come back from TJ surgery and be worth $4.9M more than he'll "only" be worth $4.7M?

I could be wrong but I think the system is based on a formula that is based on service time and past performance rather than projecting future performance.

Matt Holliday said in an interview on MLB Network Radio on Friday that he has not yet received a contract offer from any teams this offseason.
Holliday batted .262/.366/.511 with 15 home runs in the first half last season but hit just .179/.225/.300 in the second half while battling through a virus. He wants to continue playing and could probably help a team at the very least in a part-time role, but Holliday is now 38 and it's conceivable he might be pushed into retirement given how slow-moving the market has been.
