I think if you're eichorst, this is your job. Firing a good coach in Pelini, though I get the hate, and hiring Riley is a huge risk, and one that could set the program back quite a bit. Though, I guess there is upside. If Riley can recruit a little better and has the ability to turn 2 stars into 3 stars and 3 stars into 4 stars, well, I guess there's a sliver of hope, but I wouldn't have done that as NB's AD with my likely job on the line.lukethedrifter wrote:Kind of an odd hire on both ends to me.

I really think Riley did a lot of overachieving at Oregon State, but as time went on just couldn't get by with so little to offer and so much more competition for guys and improving opponents. I think guys performing a star above their level happens quite a bit with Riley. However, I also worry with all the changes in the game recently and and being an older guy tring to connect with high school kids that he may just not be a huge draw.
I'm very interested to see what he can do there. Can see it going either way.

After reading an insider's view, it makes more sense. Nebraska must see him as a guy who can thrive and rebuild a program if he's given the support, financial and otherwise.

Re: 2014 College Football Thread
SI had a little chart on hired FBS coaches between 2002-2010 (153 hires).
Roughly half of these hires were deemed to be successful coaches ( based on a record critereria FWIW)
HC that were hired from pool of:
FBS coordinators/position coaches - successful 51% of time (sample size 75)
FBS head coach - 45% were successful (sample size 53)
NFL -25% success (sample size 12)
FCS HC/ Div II HC 69% success -(sample size 13)
maybe name recognition for recruiting purposes isn't as important as I thought.
No way do I have much insight on FBS coordinators. Also, wondering how often coordinators get hired away to HC other programs, vs promoted.
The game Wisc vs Nebraska, I know MG2 (I just made that up, I know how you folks love those acronicknames
) is a horse, but there was a creative coaching ability to use him with Nebraska loaded up, since there was virtually no passing game (windy, and Stave had the yips again).
I surmise the way Wisconsin rushing machine rolls, year in and out, they got someone that may be of interest for HC job.

Wisconsin offered a place for UAB running back Jordan Howard. I hope he picks Wisconsin over Indiana and Western Kentucky.

Former Michigan football players write a letter to the team, misspell "led" as "lead."
