It's not generational. These are selfies.
Making a representation of yourself is nothing new. Certainly now you don't need talent to take a selfie, but who knows, maybe today Kahlo would have had 1.2 Instagram followers

And likely Verlander's substance.
Also a pic up on Deadspin of the two of them doing a nude selfie. Seems like the thought is it's from Verlander's phone, as it has other women in the mix. Not the other celebs, just Upton and some unknowns.
