A Missouri fan at work just bet me that Missouri will not finish .500 in the conference. I told him that they will. 10 bucks on the line here.

That's a tough one because so many games are toss-ups. But I think you made the safer bet. I assume that if they go .500 (or better), you win?

The way I see it, Alabama and (probably) South Carolina are the sort of obvious losses. Kentucky and (probably) Vanderbilt are the sort of obvious victories. All the rest could go either way, even aTm.

The winnable games are Vandy, Ky, and they need to win 2 of Tenn, Georgia, aTm. Florida, Alabama and So Carolina seem tough to me. Basically win their home games against Vandy, Ky and Goergia and win at Neyland +/or A+M

Kinda the way I look at it.

I think Franklin can take his game to a high enough level to get them over the hump in some games that people may not expect them to win.

Florida is tough but it's not completely unwinnable. Florida has gone 4-4 and 3-5 in conference the last two years, and won 7 and 8 games in those seasons, respectively. I'm sure they still have loads of talent and their home turf is a brutal place to play, so I can understand that the Gators are (and should be) favored. They've lost a few at home, so I don't quite see it as the impenetrable fortress it used to be.

Tennessee... I have no clue what to make of that. UT is undoubtedly a tough place to play but that program has floated around .500 for so long now. They're exactly the kind of team that Pinkel has beaten to build his streak of 8-9+ win seasons.

aTm has decent talent, but they'll be playing their first season under a new coach, which is tough for any program, and Mizzou hasn't lost at College Station in quite some time.

Under most circumstances, I'd count Georgia as a loss, but they'll be without a sizable portion of their secondary and Faurot Field should be as raucous as it's ever been since it'll be the SEC opener. Even with all of that, I think Georgia is a slight favorite.

Sure, GA is a juggernaut in terms of talent, but 1. it's early and GA is a notoriously slow starting team and 2. it's the kind of team that Missouri has shown they can play with (eg, oklahoma and Texas come immediately to mind) in recent years and 3. if there ever was such a thing as HFA, and there is, it'll be in full force here. Though early, both teams will be undefeated, it'll be the first SEC game in Columbia and it'll have possibly huge implications on who wins the east. Missouri, still having to go to SC and host Bama, really needs to win this game if their goal is to win the East...and I imagine that it is. In short, I fully expect this game to be circled as especially important by Pinkel. It's pretty unlikely they go to USC and win there, but it's not impossible. I think USC is over rated this year a little bit. Sure they have Lattimore back, but they don't have a QB, and the old ball coach spurrier has admitted that they'll have to be a running team this year which means run an offense that spurrier isn't really suited to coach. So, who knows. Vanderbilt actually scares the bejeesus out of me. They're much improved and I think they'll finish the year in the top 25. Of course, I thought that last year and was dead wrong. But, I wouldn't mark it as a guaranteed W. And, then there is Alabama. I'm not saying they'll win this game. But, if there is a type of team that has in the past given Saban problems, it is those with scrambling/running quarterbacks...and Alabama is young. I wouldn't bet the farm on AL in this game. Then there's KY, that should be a W. Then there's FL, that should be a W....though people will probably argue. Tennessee is a win and aTm is a close win.

If I had to guess, it'd be 6-2. Though, if they lose out of the gates to GA and then lose again to Vandy, then they're staring a 2-6 season in the conference directly in the eye. Going solely by the sagarin rankings at the end of last year (which is obviously not a good thing to do since so much turnover happens in a year) Mizzou would be 5-3 with losses to Bama, USC and aTm and victories over KY, TN, Vandy, Georia and Florida. Mizzou was young last year and has talent coming back. I think they'll be pretty competitive.

To answer the question, soc, I would have made that bet. And, my prediction is 6-2.

I have to think the odds that they lose to Vandy or Kentucky are probably worse than the odds that they win at home against Georgia or Alabama. So conservatively assuming 2-2 in those 4 games, that means they need 2 wins out of their 4 road games(Tennessee, aTm, Florida, South Carolina). To me, that's not really all that difficult a decision. They've already won at Kyle Field the last 2 years when they had returning QBs and no new coach, UT hasn't been all that good in a long while, and Florida and USC are tough games against teams that aren't expected to do huge things. Like I said before, as long as Franklin is healthy, I expect 8 wins, want to get 9, and hope for 10.
