I watch or record Teddy Atlas and ESPN Friday Night Fights every week. I really love the sport, although I can't stand the ultimate fighting stuff. It's just barbaric.

Re: Pacquiao vs Mosley
When I was in my early 20's, I once sparred in the ring with a friend who was training for Olympic tryouts. After 1 round, I was totally spent & done. in those days, I thought I was in real good shape, playing hardcore basketball 5 times a week. 1 round of boxing told me differently......and the guy didn't even qualify for the Olympics.
I've trained in tae kwon do, ran cross country, played baseball, hockey, basketball, etc.........but that 1 round of sparring took more out of me than anything I've done.

I x-train with boxing and I attribute the boxing training with getting my old ass into decent shape. After warming up with some shadow boxing I'll do 3-5 rounds of heavy bag work, always ending with a 200punch round followed by just throwing haymakers the last 30 seconds. It's really an incredible workout. I also do a couple of 3 rounds on the speed bag, although that isn't all that hard cardio wise (your arms can burn toward the end).
But just get a heavy bag and do one hard round of 3 minutes and you will see.

You just have a heavy bag at the gym/home that you swing on? Or did you go join like a Boxing Club and do that?jim wrote:I x-train with boxing and I attribute the boxing training with getting my old ass into decent shape. I think it'd be fun to join up to a boxing club and train mostly for exercise but even do some sparring and stuff.

Heavy bag/speed bag station in the basement. Was going to join a gym, but I'm playing baseball this summer. Maybe after baseball for the fall/winter I'll join to do some sparring.vinsanity wrote:You just have a heavy bag at the gym/home that you swing on? I have a heavy bag in my basement, and jim's right, 3 minutes of hitting it will wear your ass out.jim wrote:I x-train with boxing and I attribute the boxing training with getting my old ass into decent shape. Gotta keep moving too ... My routine is somewhere between 7-10 3 minute rounnds with :30 rest (I have a ring timer) split between shadow boxing/heavy bag/speed bag. I always start out with jumping rope/shadow boxing to get loose, and then work the bag easy the first round just concentrating on good form. The last round on the heavy bag is where I punch it out - I'll throw at least 200 punches in the first 2:30 and then finish with haymakers for the last :30. Finish up with a couple of rounds on the speed bag and that's a good workout.
Just a warning though - you can really hurt yourself on the bag. Wrap your hands (the shorter 108" wraps are fine) and I recommend a decent pair of gloves. I got a cheap pair of fingerless bag gloves with the heavy bag and there is no wrist support and my knuckles were still bloodied up. Don't get the $25 gloves - go one up one notch and there is a big difference.
These give nice support and I've used them heavily for four months and they are holding up well:

Re: Pacquiao vs Mosley
Mayweather turned down a reported $60 million to fight Pacquiao.
He owes the IRS like $40 million, so he figured it be a beating worth more than $20 million cash.

This is one of the reasons why boxing is awful. There should be no politics in competition. Can you imagine Roger Federer refusing to play Rafael Nadal? Pacquiao is the best fighter in the world and Mayweather keeps confirming it.robbotis wrote:Mayweather turned down a reported $60 million to fight Pacquiao.
