I can't tell you the number of times I have had to deal with this crap. Mostly at work.
Usually I end up saying something like, "Is it really necessary to go there?" though I have been far more strident depending on what is being said.
Thus I have been called a n****r lover. To be fair, I have also been called a racist by a black co-worker as well so I must be doing something right/wrong.

"No taxes! No (unreadable)! No watermelon! Vote McCain!"

I took my mother to the doctor today in Quincy, IL. For those of you not familiar it's a town of about 40k people. There are people of all race there, but obviously in central IL most people are white. In the waiting room we are just siting there minding our own business when from behind me I heard this guy say to his wife "if I would have know there would have been so many (N WORD WITH THE HARD R) here I'd have concealed carried no matter what the sign out front says.
My Mom and I just looked at each other in disbelief. I've heard plenty of racism over the years but right there, in the hospital waiting room, just because there were black people there two. BTW the two black people were elderly and seemed very sweet which makes it all the crazier.

I have a vivid memory of being 8, playing on a play thing at the mall with a black kid who was there, and my great-grandma telling me not to talk to hard r n words. I had never heard that word before but I just knew from the reaction of everyone around that it was really bad. Her husband, my great grandpa, had a brief dalliance with the Klan, but quit, not because it was bad, but because it was too far to drive.

My great aunt and uncle ran a mercantile store in downtown Quincy for something like 60 years.
