Somewhat, I still don't think it makes a ton of sense to not put your best pitcher against their best, unless there's a clear gap between the two (such as when Juan Marichal was given an extra day of rest instead of facing Gibson in '68, since they had it penciled in as a loss).

I would argue that you want your best pitchers pitching the most games you can. Same reason that you want your best hitters near the top of the lineup - to get the most at bats. It gives you more chances to win when Felix is pitching, so why push him back and have him start fewer games on the season?

Exactly. Push him back enough times during the season for match up sake and you'll lose starts.
