rookie pitcher on the mound against Stan Musial with Hall of Fame umpire and Springfield Illinois native Al Barlick behind the plate. The 1st 2 pitches are close but called balls and after each pitch the rookie complains. Barlick took his mask off and went in front of the plate and said:

"Son, When you throw a strike Mr. Musial will let you know"

I worked with Barlicks nephew who confirmed the story and added that Stan the Man was Barlicks favorite player.

I have no way to prove this at all, but I believe I have the last autograph ever signed by Barlick. My uncle new him very well, remained lifelong friends. Went to visit him Christmas Eve, brought him a ball to sign for me as a Christmas present, and then he passed away a couple of days later.

I've also seen the "he'll let you know" line attributed to an umpire speaking of Ted Williams.

A lot of baseball quotes are apocryphal, and have been around for generations - they get passed down from generation to generation, especially on the winter banquet circuit (although the circuit doesn't seem to be nearly as active as it was years ago).
